Tressie Viola Benson, 101, died August 19, 2013, at her home. Born in Marks, MS. She came to Toledo in 1934 and was a longtime member of St. Paul Baptist Church. She was a deaconess, sang in the choir, was a member of the Missionary Society and the Genesis Circle. She and her husband, Escar Benson Sr. (who preceded her in death), were the owners of Dorr Street Auto Repair. While he ran the business, she worked as the Bookkeeper. Tressie also worked as a teacher's aide with the Headstart Program at Ryder Elementary School for many years.
She leaves to cherish her memory, three sons, James R. (Madgeolyn) Benson, MD, William "Snookie" Benson and Escar "Billy" Benson Jr.; son-in-law, Eddie Cole ESQ.; 10 grandchildren, Alphonzo Bounds, Pamela (Derrick) Robinson, Reginald J. (Cerue) Carroll, Kimberly Campbell, Barry (Velma) Benson, Angela Benson, Lito Johnson, Cindy (Earnie) Fields, Bennettia (Isaac) Taylor and Tressie (Dwight) Lewis; 14 great-grandchildren; 5 great-great-grandchildren, and one great-great-great-grandchild; nephew, Archie Beasley Sr., and grandnephew, Archie Beasley Jr., and other relatives and friends.
Visitation will be Sunday 6:00-8:00 p.m. Dale-Riggs Funeral Home Chapel, family hour Monday 10:00 a.m., followed by funeral services at 11:00 a.m. St. Paul Baptist Church, Rev. James H. Willis officiant, interment Historic Woodlawn Cemetery.
