Walter Joseph

Walter Joseph Clauss passed away at home, January 13, 2013. Born January 17, 1928, in Shelby, Ohio to Francis and Blanche (Guilder) Clauss. Walter's father was killed in a farm accident when he was 2. His mother would later marry Charles Billman and move them to Bradner, Ohio where Walter graduated from Bradner High School in 1945.

Walter joined the Army and served in the occupation of Japan. He married Donna Jane Newlove in 1948 and they moved to Chicago so he could attend Coyne Electrical School. After graduation he worked at Torrence Radio for six years. Walter then went to work at The Prestolite Company, where he retired after 35 years. Walter earned his Engineering degree from the University of Toledo while going to night school. He was a member of the Society of Automotive Engineer's' and he was credited with several patents. He also worked part time as the Sound Engineer at the former Sports Arena for 23 years. After retiring he volunteered as a tax preparer for the AARP and served on the Board of Elections as Poll Judge. Walter was a member of the First Alliance Church.

The happiest moments for Walter were always times when he was surrounded by his family. One of the highlights of his life was the surprise 80th birthday party given by his children.

Walter was preceded in death by his best friend and wife, Donna; his parents; stepfather, and brother, George. He is survived by his sons, George (Kay Lynn) and Charles (Marci) Clauss; daughters, Beth (Terry) Wilkins and Susan (Tim) Niemiec; grandchildren, Erin (Joe) Szymczak, Joshua Clauss, Regan (Mark) Upite, Charlie and Thomas Wilkins, Amy and Katy Printki, Joe and Sam Niemiec; great-grandchildren, Jonah and Rowan Szymczak, Mikki Fritch and Otto and Aija Upite.

Friends may call at the Walter Funeral Home, 4653 Glendale Ave., on Friday, January 18, 2013, from 10 a.m. until 12 noon with funeral services beginning at noon. Burial will follow in Historic Woodlawn Cemetery. Memorial contributions are suggested to be made to First Alliance Church, 2201 Monroe Street, Toledo, Ohio 43604.
