William Louis "Sarge"



William Louis Johnson of Toledo, OH left his earthly home on Friday, November 8,

2013, at Franciscan Care

center to join his Father in heaven.

William was born on March 7. 1933, to Mary Elizabeth Hall and William (Sky)

Johnson in Cincinnati, Ohio. He attended Douglas Elementary School and Withrow High School. After serving 4 years in the U.S. Navy,

William returned to school and graduated from Tuskegee High School in 1957. He went on to earn his Bachelor's Degree in Education at Johnson C. Smith University (JCSU), followed by his receiving his Masters of Education from Boston State College a number of years later.

William began his work career early in life, working in his dad's restaurant, learning the intricacies of managing a restaurant. During his adult work career he held many positions and among them was a physical education instructor at Harmony Hill for Emotionally Disturbed Children, an Outreach Worker for the Boston YMCA, Director of Outreach for the Toledo YMCA, teacher in the Toledo Public Schools, Dean of Boys and Night School Principal at Woodward High School, retiring from the school system in 1994. He worked many part-time jobs, among them a Park Ranger for the Toledo Metro Parks, Security Guard for The Toledo Hospital, Summer Camp Director at UT for underprivileged youths and Summer Fun at the Red Cross. During this time he served in the U.S. Army

Reserves, retiring in 1992,

after serving 22 years in the military and reaching the rank of Master Sergeant (nickname, Sarge).

In William's retirement years he enjoyed riding his classic motorcycle, cruising around town on his bike. Visiting the casinos in Canada and stopping at his favorite clubs where he'd have a drink with the fellows discussing the Cleveland Browns were two of his favorite hobbies. He also took the time to travel to the eastern and western states with his partner, Mary Anteau. William was a member of Omega Psi Phi fraternity and also played semi-pro football.

He was preceded in death by his parents. William is survived by his daughters, Pamela Johnson, Christine Johnson and Mary Phillips; granddaughters, China and Codi Phillips; grandson, James Ridley; sister, Betty (Carl) Tuggle, and nieces.

A special thank you to the Franciscan Care Center and Senior Independence Hospice for their genuine care and support during Sarge's stay at the care center.

Final resting place Ottawa Hills Memorial Park, 4210 W. Central Avenue, Toledo, OH. Memorial contributions: Johnson C. Smith University, Alumni Chapter, Charlotte, NC.

Services are 1:00 p.m. Saturday, November 16, 2013, preceded by wake services at 12:00 noon at The House of Day Funeral Home.
