BROOKENS Barbara A. Barbara A. Brookens, 67, passed away September 29, 2010, in Washington Adventist Hospital in Tacoma Park, MD. Born on February 8, 1943, in Bronx, New York, to the late Maurice and Marie Toliver, she received her formal education in the New York Public School System. At an early age she joined Rendall Memorial Presbyterian Church. In 1967, she married George Gourdine and to this union one child was born. She then relocated to Washington, DC, where she started taking care of several children. She loved and cared for them as if they were her own. While living in Washington she joined East Friendship Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor Willie Green. In 1987, she found true love once again and married Robert Brookens. She then relocated with her new husband to Toledo, Ohio, where she continued to nurture and care for children. In 1988 she joined Family Baptist Church and studied to become a Deaconess under the leadership of Pastor Charles H. McBee. She moved back to the Washington, DC, area to be near her family and although her health had started failing she continued to serve the Lord. Barbara is preceded in eternal life by two brothers, Ralph Boyce and Maurice Toliver and one sister, Patricia Pickett. She leaves to celebrate her life one daughter, Sandra Gourdine; one grandson, Antonio Best; two great grandchildren, Ashton and Kimorah Best; one sister, Sandra Brennan; nieces, nephews and a host of loving family and friends.
