AMROSS

James Craig

James "Jim/Jimmy" Craig Amross died as a result of a heart attack at the age of 68 Tuesday, April 9, 2014, at his home in Sylvania, Ohio.

Jim was born October 19, 1945, to Frances and Thomas Amross in Riverview, Michigan. He was the youngest of four children who survive him, Margaret Smith, Arlene Champnella, and Thomas (Debby) Amross.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret; his children, Pamela (Rob) O'Neil, Erin (Casey), Jessica, and Amanda. He was also the

loving grandfather to four beautiful granddaughters, Gabriel, Cameron, Caroline, and Peyton.

Jim graduated from Northern Michigan University, but after being drafted during the Vietnam War, radio became his passion. He was a disc jockey in Vietnam and

continued his career when he returned home, expanding into acting as well.

Jim was passionate about many things, most especially his family, whom he loved dearly. He was also an avid gardener and loved showing off his vegetable garden to all who were willing. Jim was an accomplished cook, most famous for his macaroni and cottage cheese and chicken noodle soup and loved using fresh ingredients from his garden. Those who met Jim, knew that the Detroit Red Wings held a special place in his heart, as did the city they hail from.

The Amross family would like to extend a thank you to the emergency respondents and all those who assisted the night of Jim's heart

attack. His family will be forever grateful for their dedication and helpfulness. They would also like to thank all those who have offered their comfort and support during this difficult time. It means more than words can say.

Jim will be missed by all who knew him. His humor was unique and inimitable. Nevertheless, we know that he will forever be with us, in our hearts and minds, watching over us.

Funeral services and Military Honors for Jim will be held on Tuesday, April 15, 2014, at 2:30 p.m. in the Great Lakes National Cemetery Holly, Michigan. Urbanski's Bedford Funeral Chapel 8300 Lewis Ave. Temperance, MI were entrusted with Jim's funeral arrangements. Online condolences can be shared at

It's hard to believe that Jim has been gone for 10 years. Jim, Mike Sullivan and myself spent many hours playing monopoly, it was just our way of passing the time in Vietnam. Jim was a talented radio announcer and truly a good friend. It is strange that earlier this week I wife asked me specifically about Jim when we were discussing the 50th anniversary of our troops leaving Vietnam. Jim Amross will forever be remembered as a good friend and I'm glad I had an opportunity to meet him in the times we shared together in Saigon

Jim and I over-lapped careers at NMU, WDMJ-AM/FM, Marquette, MI; and in the American Forces Radio & Television Service (AFRTS).

He was in Vietnam (see photo); I was in the Land of the Mid-Night Sun, Alaska.

Always so up-beat. He loved his family, his country and enjoyed life. Jim, I'm just signing off (for now).

I met Jim at the Oakland Army Depot on the way to Vietnam. We became fast friends and agreed to try to look out for each other if we met again in S.E. Asia. Turns out we ended up bunkmates for the year in Saigon at AFVN. Jim's companionship made those long days a lot shorter for me. Gary Brill mentioned our Monopoly games – we actually wore the game out and had to have another sent over! Boardwalk with four hotels and Free Parking to you friend… and a free Black Label from the Amsul Foundation refridgerator. [email protected]
