Rick H. St. Johns, 50, of Genoa, Ohio passed away on Monday, April 21, 2014, at Mercy Heart and Vascular Center at St. Vincent in Toledo. He was born January 9, 1964, in Toledo to Duwane and Patricia L. (Yates) St. Johns Sr. and was a graduate of Start High School. Having been left paralyzed after an accident at an early age, Rick taught by example that when you put your mind to something, anything can be accomplished.
His determined spirit and love for sports resonated with his accomplished life. Since the age of 12, his love of basketball began He played for the Toledo Silver Streaks Basketball team and won Gold in Seoul, Korea in 1988 and in 1992, the Silver Medal in England for the USA Paralympic Basketball Team. He was inducted into the Ohio State Hall of Fame for wheelchair basketball and coached several basketball teams throughout Northwest Ohio and Cleveland. He was an avid golfer and taught golf at the Ability Center in both Toledo and Cleveland. In his spare time, Rick enjoyed fishing and spending time with his family. He was a member of the Rossford F.O.E. Aerie No. 2322 and the Northwood VFW Post 2984.
Rick is survived by his mother, Pat St. Johns; father, Duwane Sr. (Virginia); sister, Joy (Roger) Moser; brothers, Duwane Jr. (Della) and Jason (LeAnn); step-sisters, Kristina (Derek) Kieffer and Karri (Ryan) Knoblauch and best buddy, Liam DeCant along with numerous aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.
Family and friends may visit the Freck Funeral Chapel, 1155 S. Wynn Rd. in Oregon from 2-8 p.m. on Thursday, April 24, 2014, with a service conducted by the Rossford Eagles to begin at 7 p.m. Funeral service will begin at 11 a.m. on Friday in the funeral home with burial to follow at Lake Township Cemetery.
