Allan James Devine, age 67, of Sylvania, Ohio, died Friday, May 2, 2014, after his courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. He was born November 12, 1946, in Bellefontaine, Ohio, to Donald and Berniece (Evans) Devine.
Al served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Germany for three years. He earned a bachelor's degree in education from Bowling Green State University and completed a master's and specialist's degrees from the University of Toledo. He taught Language Arts and then Marketing Education at Whitmer High School. Al devoted many years to the Teachers' Association of Washington Local Schools and retired in 2001 after 30 years.
Al loved traveling in Ireland and visited there many times, often taking his wife and friends on tours. He and his wife, Carol, also enjoyed Caribbean cruises and spending winter at their home in Haines City, Florida. He was an avid reader, particularly Irish history. Allan loved caring for his tropical fish and dining out with family and friends. After retiring, he volunteered at St. Anne's Hospital. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him.
He is survived by his loving wife, Carol; his stepchildren, Kristine (John) Sanders and William (Christie) Dressel; grandchildren, Alia, Rylie, Johnny, Raygen, Billy, and Abby. Left to cherish his memory are his cousins, Charles Haw, David Haw and Betsy (Chip) Schaechterle, niece Emily and nephew, Eddie; his dear friends, Wayne (his chosen brother) and Joyce Davis and their family, Chris (Marcia) Davis, Lori (Dan) Wittler and Mindy (Mike) Buell; close friends, Harry Will and Mary Ellen Fisher. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Terry L. Devine.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, May 10, 2014, from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. at the Reeb Funeral Home, 5712 N. Main Street, Sylvania, where the memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Interment will follow at Toledo Memorial Park.
