Joseph Long, 69, passed away suddenly on May 2, 2014, in Las Vegas, NV, doing his 2 favorite hobbies- darts and gambling. He was born on October 12, 1944, to Joseph Casper Jr. and Frances (Bolinsky) Long. After graduating from Mahannoy Area High School in Pennsylvania, he joined the U.S. Marines.
In the Marines, Joseph was Legal Chief, with management responsibilities including notification of next-of-kin to those Marines and sailors killed or wounded in Vietnam. He served 2 terms in Vietnam, and was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam service and Campaign Medal and the Pistol Sharp-shooter Badge. After the war, Joseph served as Administrative Supply Technician at the PA Army National Guard, supervising payroll, recruiting and maintenance. He then served as a supply clerk and Blocker/Bracer for hazardous material at the Army Depot in Tobyhanna, PA.
Joseph was employed as a CNC Machinist for Gould's Pump at Barrett Haentjene, where he machined metals from rough castings to conform to blue print specifications. He also was a truck driver for Colonial Courier Service and a route supervisor with Krispy Kreme Corp. Joseph spent time working as a medical support assistant at the VA in Ann Arbor until retirement.
He was an avid dart player, and member of the NDA soft tip League out of Daffy's, as well as a steel tip league in Bowling Green. His other hobbies included golfing and boating.
Joseph was a proud member of the Knights of Columbus in Pennsylvania and also at St. Patrick's of Heatherdowns Church in Toledo, until he had to resign due to illness. He served as the Chaplin for the American Legion Post 646 in Holland.
He will be sadly missed by his surviving wife, Karen Long; his brother, Michael (Wilma) Long, (Pennsylvania); his children, Katie Long (Pennsylvania), Joseph Long (Florida) and Rebecca Meyers (Florida); grandchildren, Michael and Michelle Meyers (Florida), and Edmund "Butchie" Meyers (Texas). He is also survived by his brothers-in-law, Francis Karmol (Rachael), Warren (Kathy) Karmol Jr., and Michael (Agnes) Karmol, and many more nieces and nephews.
A memorial mass will be held on Thursday, May 22, 2014, at 10 a.m. at St. Patrick's of Heatherdowns Church, with an hour of visitation before. His urn will be placed at Resurrection Cemetery, and following that a brunch will be served at the American Legion Post 646, 1074 Clarion Rd. in Holland.
