Sophie Kufel Obituary

Sophie M.

Sophie M. Kufel, age 94, of Toledo, passed to her eternal resting place on Tuesday, June 10, 2014, at The Toledo Hospital, surrounded by her devoted family. She was born December 11, 1919, to Jacob and Mary (Bobak) Kufel in Toledo, OH.

Sophie was a member of the former Nativity Catholic Church during her youth and has been a member of St. Hyacinth Catholic Church for more than 60 years. She was a retiree of Doehler-Jarvis after 40+ years of service. In her younger years, Sophie was an avid bowler and enjoyed crocheting and knitting beautiful pieces of handwork. Throughout her life, she always enjoyed bingo, festivals, playing the lottery and trips to the casino. Her favorite in-home pastime was baking. Some of her family favorites were grasshopper ice cream pie and strawberry cheesecake, either of which was never missing from a holiday menu, most recently Easter of this year. She was a hard-working, independent, and a sometimes strong-willed woman with a loving heart and an unassuming nature. She was a faithful caregiver to her mother who lived at home until she was 106 years old, and a constant companion to her sister, Lottie. Although she had no children of her own, she was a kind and thoughtful aunt to many nieces and nephews, great and great-great-nieces and nephews and their families who survive her.

Sophie is fondly remembered by her brother, Gerald (Kathleen) Kufel. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her sisters, Stella (John) Polaski, Rose (Steve) Kaifas, and Lottie (Gene) Oleksiak; brother, Raymond Kufel; and several nieces and nephews.

Family and friends may visit at Sujkowski Funeral Home Northpointe, 114 E. Alexis Rd. from 2-8 p.m. on Thursday, and at St. Hyacinth Church from 10-11 a.m. on Friday. The Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. at the church followed by interment at Resurrection Cemetery.

Special thanks to anyone who has touched Sophie's life through the years, and to those who have assisted her while at The Toledo Hospital in recent weeks. Online condolences can be shared at
