Jean V.

Jean V. Kurkiewicz, age 95, formerly of West Lake St. in the Polish Village, passed away Wednesday, June 18, in the arms of her family. She was born November 17, 1918, in Toledo to Peter and Rose (Suminski) Szafarek. A homemaker, Jean worked for St. Regis Paper Company, Lake Side Biscuit, and Willy's Overland. She was an accomplished seamstress, who also enjoyed knitting and crocheting. Jean excelled in the kitchen with her specialties being grilled cheese sandwiches, meatloaf and cake decorating. She loved attending all the polish dances with her husband, Thaddeus. Jean remained mentally sharp till the very end, still completing her word puzzles and reading the Danielle Steel novels that she loved. A lifetime parishioner of St. Adalbert Catholic Church, she was a member of the Altar Rosary Society. Jean also belonged to the Zablocki Senior Center.

She is survived by her daughters, Gayle (Daniel) Schuldt and Debbie (Jack) Smith, and grandchildren, Darla (Kent) Schuldt-Unkle, Taylor Smith and Thaddeus "Ted" Smith. She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Rose Jesionowski and Clara Golatka, and brother, Frank Szafarek.

Family and friends may visit Friday from 3:00-7:00 p.m. at Sujkowski Funeral Home Northpointe, 114 E. Alexis Rd. where there will be a scripture service at 6:00 p.m. Funeral Services will begin Saturday at 9:15 a.m. in the funeral home and continue with the Funeral Mass in St. Adalbert Catholic Church at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow in Mt. Carmel Cemetery.
