Curtis Merlin Hitchner Jr. Obituary
HITCHNER

Curtis Merlin Jr.

Curtis Merlin Hitchner Jr. passed away in his home early Thursday morning, June 26, 2014, after a brave battle with Lymphoma. Curt was born in Woodbury, NJ on December 30, 1935, to Mildred Hamilton Berry and Curtis Merlin Hitchner Sr. Curt was a 1955 graduate of Pitman High School where he met his high school sweetheart, Kay. Curt went on to obtain his bachelor of science in business administration from the Drexel Institute of Technology (Philadelphia, PA) in 1961. While at Drexel, Curt was an active member of Delta Kappa Rho fraternity and has kept in touch with many friends and fraternity brothers.

Curt began his engineering career in 1961 with Owens-Illinois (Kimble Glass) in Vineland, NJ. In 1966, he accepted a position with Owens Corning in Barrington, NJ. In 1973, OC provided the opportunity to relocate the family to Toledo, OH where Curt served as Manager, Administrative Engineering Services for Corporate Engineering until 1995, and retired after 30 years of service to the firm. His efforts in moving people in the organization were well appreciated, both in his efficiency and in his compassion for individual situations. Upon retirement from OC, Curt realized he wasn't ready to stop working just yet and went to work for AVCA Corp in Toledo, OH from 1996-2001.

Once Curt officially retired, he spent his time traveling around the United States with his wife, Kay and traveling companions, Roger and JoAnne Kennedy, and playing golf. Curt was a longtime member and choir participant at Covenant Presbyterian Church. He and Kay joined Epworth United Methodist Church in 2000; he served on the Board of Trustees and was a member of the choir. Curt, Kay, and other members of Epworth were part of a mission trip to New Orleans to help rebuild homes for victims of Hurricane Katrina. Curt's favorite activities included carpentry, electrical work, model trains, collecting rare and unique coins, and spending time with his two dogs.

In his final days, Kay rarely left his side. When she did, she left a bell for him to summon her if he needed anything. Upon filling his request, she would ask if she could get him anything else. His reply was, "no dear, you've given me everything."

Curt is survived by his wife of 54 years, Kay (Hitchner); daughter, Wendy (David) Danner of Fletcher, NC; son, Curt (Rita); grandchildren, Shaina, Aaron, Carrie, and Tim, and a brother, John (Joyce) of Morrisville, PA.

Friends may visit the Walker Funeral Home, 5155 W. Sylvania Ave. Toledo, OH on Sunday, June 29, 2014, from 4-7 p.m. A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. on Monday, June 30, at Epworth United Methodist Church, 3077 Valleyview Dr. Toledo, OH.

The family wishes to thank The Toledo Hospital 7th floor oncology unit for their support and care. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Northwest Ohio, 30000 E. River Rd. Perrysburg, OH 43551 or Epworth United Methodist Church. Online condolences may be shared at
