Former Educator and League Championship Coach of the Sylvania School System. Lewis A. Whitman, 95, a former Toledo resident, passed away Sunday, July 6, 2014, in Pittsburg, PA.
Lew taught and coached at Burnham High School from 1946 until 1960, when he moved to Sylvania Northview High School and stayed until 1976. Lew then became the Assistant Principal of Northview High School. He retired from the Sylvania School System in 1984 after more than 30 years of service to the community. Lew taught anatomy, advanced biology, was the coordinator of the math and science departments, and served as the National Honor Society and I Questor advisor. Lew was an innovator, he turned the courtyard near his room into a mini zoo, filled with rabbits, opossums, turtles, snakes, and any other creatures his students would provide. Lew served as Head Basketball Coach at Burnham for 11 years and Track Coach for 8 years. He was recently inducted into the Sylvania Athletic Hall of Fame.
Lew was proud to have served almost 5 years with the United States Army during WWII, serving most of those years in the Aleutian Islands and Alaska.
He is survived by his wife, Rita Whitman; daughters, Marianna Baker, Maria Louise Whitman, Merrie Belle Powell, and Carmelina (Robert) Larke; sons, William Alvon (Sharyn) and Lewis Vincent (Mary) Whitman MD; 18 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren, and sister, Jeanne Stein. Lew was preceded in death by his spouse, Mary Ann Whitman in 1968.
Lew's life will be celebrated at the Gesu Catholic Church Friday, July 11th at 11 a.m., where his body will lie in state one hour prior. He will be laid to rest with Military Honors, at Calvary Cemetery.

Mr. Whitman will be remembered as a friend, a mentor, and an advocate for all his students. He will be greatly missed by everyone he touched especially his six children who loved and respected him beyond measure.
