Thomas James Jr.



Thomas James Pope Jr., 50, of Sevierville, Tennessee, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Saturday, August 9, 2014, following a valiant two-year battle with brain cancer. He was born on April 15, 1964, in Toledo, Ohio, to Mr. Thomas Pope Sr., and Mrs. Gladys LaPlante, who both survive him.

Tom graduated from Anthony Wayne High School in 1982, where he was a three-sport athlete, earning multiple regional and state honors. Following graduation, he attended Bowling Green University where he played football.

Tom was a jack-of-all-trades, owning several small businesses many of which were in the construction industry, and most recently in publishing. His interests and talents were not contained to professional industry, as he was a beloved coach and mentor to many youth sports teams in the area.

A committed husband of 27 years, he was married to, and is survived by, wife, Sheryl Ann Miller. He was a loving father to his four surviving children and their spouses, daughter, McKenzie Pope Moffett (Samuel Moffett); son, Kyle Pope (Kelsey Fisher Pope), sons, Trent Pope and Austin Pope. Tom is survived by members of the Miller family by whom he was considered a son, brother and beloved uncle; parents, Leon and Shirley Miller; sister-in-law, Brenda and Gary Mull and children, Jonathan and Christopher Mull, Kathy and Tom Cothern and children, Kelly and David Evans, Matthew, Jennifer and Josie Cothern, Susan and Kenny Lee and children, Abigail, Ryan, Savannah, Allison, Elijah, and Emma; brother-in-law, Keith and Lori Miller and children, Jaimee and Kent Benjamin, Aaron Miller and daughter, Kori, Edward and Judith Budd and family, Chris, Todd and John Budd, also survive him.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to a college fund that has been established for Tom's children. Donations can be made at any area Tennessee State Bank location c/o Tom Pope College Fund.

Funeral Service 7 p.m. Tuesday at New Hope Church, 2450 Winfield Dunn Parkway, Kodak, Tennessee. Interment 11 a.m. Wednesday in Middle Creek Cemetery, Sevierville. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at New Hope Church. Arrangements by Atchley Funeral Home, Sevierville.
