Judge William J. Skow

William Skow Obituary

SKOW Judge William J. Judge William J. Skow, 68 years, of West Toledo passed away of severe pancreatitis early Sunday, June 21, 2009, at Toledo Hospital. Born in Toledo, May 20, 1941, to John and Lucile (Alexander) Skow he took his interest in politics and ran with it like the athletes he admired as a child. He attended Harvard University and majored in American Government. After graduating from one of the country's most prestigious institutions in 1963, Judge Skow began studying for his J.D. at, "one of the better law schools in the country, then or now," the University of Michigan. According to the Judge, "Attending U of M's law school was a good decision. I've always liked Ann Arbor and I was ready to come back to the Midwest." The Judge was awarded the Bronze Star and discharged in 1969 after 22 months in the Army serving a year in Vietnam. During America's Bicentennial, Judge Skow got involved in the re-election campaign of 9th District US Congressman Thomas "Lud" Ludlow Ashley. After the win, Ashley's chief legislative assistant was given a position in President Carter's administration and the Congressman asked Skow to fill the now empty seat. Upon his second return to Toledo, the Judge resumed his private practice work for a couple of years until Governor Celeste appointed him to a seat on the Toledo Municipal Court Bench. After three years he was again appointed to a bench position by Governor Celeste, this time in the Common Pleas Court. He would remain a judge there for 19 years. The Judge has also been very involved for years in the Junior Bar Association's annual Gridiron Show. His dedication to young Toledo lawyers has earned him both the Order of the Sole and the Order of the Heel. After nearly 20 grinding years in Common Pleas Court, Judge Skow was endorsed and won the race, for Appeals Court in 2004 where he remained until his death. A number of his opinions have been published and received commentary both locally and nationally. What the Judge really enjoyed were the people he worked with. "I've been very lucky in terms of the support staff I've had working for me. My bailiffs and court reporters too have always been top notch. My staff attorneys here are of the highest caliber. Also, I've found that both judges and lawyers in Toledo to be a pretty interesting class of individuals, interested in things well beyond the practice of law." He was loved for his humor and quick wit. He belonged to several organizations that promote Human Rights and Civil Rights. Surviving are his wife of 30 years, Felicia Skow; daughters, Sarah Skow and Sasha (Bobby) Skow-Lindsey along with brothers, Jack (Olga) Skow and Jim (Kristi) Skow. The family is deeply grateful for the wonderful care given by the entire staff at Toledo Hospital's Medical Intensive Care Unit. Friends may call at the Coyle Funeral Home, 1770 So. Reynolds Road Wednesday beginning at 2 p.m. where services will begin at 7 p.m. Interment will be private. Memorials may take the form of a contribution to the Southern Poverty Law Center, 400 Washington Ave., Montgomery, AL 36104, the Toledo Chapter of the American Red Cross or WGTE Public Radio, Toledo. To the Family of Judge Skow - we were very sorry to hear of his passing. We were very lucky to have met him thru your niece, Linda and he very graciously married us on 6/22/91. He enjoyed our Hawaiian themed wedding and celebrated it wearing his bright floral tie. Again, our sympathies. Earl & Beth Emery

Dear Felicia, I am deeply saddened to hear of Bill's passing. I always felt a deep kinship with him. Years ago we shared some of our personal writings, including poetry, with each other and our conversations were most enjoyable when they did not involve the law. His golfing escapades were legendary and I would not have missed playing with him for anything. His legacy are his children and the compassion that he had for those who appeared before him. I will miss him very much. Much love, Steve and Bert Newcomer.

To the family of Judge Skow, it is a deep sadness that I have for the loss of Judge. He was so passionate about his work and about people. I will never forget how he aided so many persons addicted to drugs and alcohol on giving them another chance on life, sending them to my drug program (The Road). Know that my prayers are with you greatly during this time.

Prayerfully,

Jeff Gamso

He deserved all the praise. He was generous, fair, compassionate, wise, learned, witty, acerbic, sly, and fearless. He was devoted to his work and to justice. And, of course, to his family.

I was particularly honored that he agreed to swear me in as an Ohio lawyer.

What a terrible loss.

We often think that people have to leave home before their accomplishments are rightfully acknowledged. Bill never had to leave the bench or his chambers to be recognized for the brilliant scholar and decent human being that he was. His death is a profound loss for the legal community and equally so for anyone who simply loved his creativity and wit. He knew that we can find humor in almost anything to lighten a day, and he was surely the master at finding it.
Felicia, Sarah, Sasha, we share your sorrow and remember wonderful times.

My wife, Elizabeth, and I were college classmates of Bill's. He excelled at such a range of activities, from sports, to knowledge of music, radio broadcasting, history, the law, poker, writing .... I spent a fair amount of time in his dorm room, where card play, music and bull sessions went on almost without interruption. His roommates Tom Rush and Phil Tilney were both great fellows.
Skow had one of the driest, sharpest wits ever honed and wielded. But his courageous and insightful judicial opinions, especially those that combated racism, are his greatest career legacy, in my view.
I was glad to reconnect with Skow and to meet Felicia, thanks to the luck of meeting Sarah here in Ann Arbor. To Felicia, Sarah, and Sasha, Eliza and I send our sympathy. We hope you'll contact us whenever you're in Ann Arbor.

I knew Bill best in his Harvard days when we shared a room in Leverett House. And his regular visits to Bloomington, Indiana during his military training. He was Best Man at Ellen's and my wedding in 1964.
I am so sorry to hear of his passing. He played a great part in my early life and I will miss him sorely.
I send my deep sympathy to Felicia and the girls.

Dear Felicia, Sarah, and Sasha,

I treasure the years I spent as Bill's bailiff at the Toledo Municipal Court. Those were some of the most hilarious times of my life. I tried, but failed miserably, to suppress a giggle every time he passed the latest Gridiron lyrics my way RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF COURT!!! I am proud to call him friend, and I cherish my memories of his wicked sense of humor, his brilliant legal mind, and his unselfish kindness to so many people who passed through his life, myself included. Much love, Pamela ("Shamela") Broer Browning.

Judge Skow was one of the first before whom I appeared in the court appointed defense of a criminal defendant. Judge Skow was gracious, fair and a great teacher. He continued that manner of treatment of me and everyone else who appeared in his courtroom. I am certain that God has taken him home. My sympathy is with you all.

Felicia, Sarah and Sasha:
Bill's passing creates a void in the Northwest Ohio legal community that will not easily, if ever, be filled. I admired him most for his courage and willingness to go against the mainstream whenever he felt that it was justified. My family and I will keep all of you in our prayers.

I read with much sadness of Bill's passing. I cannot believe it has been 30 plus years! The very fond memories of the TC Northend Group and the wonderful friendships that developed are remembered at times like these with many smiles and chuckles.

May your way be eased by knowing that your friends (both in town and out of town) are sending all of their love and kind thoughts to you to help you thru this very difficult time.

So sorry to hear about Bill. I grew up with the Skow family in Ottawa Hills..we lived on Grimsby Place which was not far from the Skow family home. My dear Dad had the highest regard for Dr. Skow and he was our family eye Doctor. And, thinking back, I associate our Christmas trees coming from a lot Dr. Skow sponsored. What a wonderful obituary for Bill for a life so well lived and admired. You all must be so very proud. It was a joy to read of all of his accomplishments and I am sure he is going to be missed greatly by his family and all who knew him. Condolences to Jim and all of the Skow family. You are in my prayers.

Felicia: You and your family are in my prayers. You may not remember me, but we hung out at Central when we were kids. I am deeply sorry for your loss.
I met "Bill" back in the 70's when he was an attorney and helped some of the residents of The Family Tree. He had a great sense of humor and encouraged the residents he helped to go on and make something of themselves; I always appreciated that.
Again, you are all in my prayers.

My condolences to your family. Judge Skow was fair in his decisions and intense and detailed in his knowledge of the information that passed before him on the bench. Even though I did not know him personally, I knew of him and followed some of his work and found him fascinating in his humor, wit and "right on" decisions. A friend

I have never met a more fair, honest, compassionate, as well as being the smartest man I have ever known. Judge Skow was a pleasure to know, and work with. He was only in Toledo Municipal Court a short time, but I learned a lot working for him. He was also a wicked card player when Judges,Prosecutors, Court Staff, and Deputies would would leave the titles at the door and play every day at lunch time.

Condolences to the family of Judge Skow.
