RUANE Stephen P. "Steve" Stephen P. "Steve" Ruane, age 51, passed away Thursday, February 4, 2010, in his Sylvania home. Steve was born June 20, 1958 in Ft. Huachuca, AZ, to Douglas and Shirley Ruane. He spent his early years as part of a military family stationed in various Army installations, both in the United States and overseas. A 1978 graduate of the University of Hawaii, Steve earned his bachelor of fine arts in German. He was gifted in computer science and was employed as lead computer analyst for Pilkington Glass Company. He had his pilot's license and enjoyed making model airplanes and rockets. Steve found much enjoyment in building computers, bicycles, picture frames, ammunition reloading and just about anything with his hands. Steve was an avid cyclist, biking up to 300 miles a week and 100 miles on weekends with his riding group of friends. His hobby was tragically cut short in May 2007 when he was struck and severely injured by a motorist in Toledo. This accident resulted in permanent paralysis of the majority of his body, which confined him to a wheelchair and his bed for his remaining years. In early 2009, Steve developed a particularly vicious cancer, and was undergoing extensive chemotherapy and radiation treatments at the time of his passing. Even during his illness he remained courageous and filled with positive energy as he continued to work from home. Through it all, Steve never lost his love of life, his fine sense of humor, or his deep respect for people. Steve is survived by his soul mate, caregiver, and very best friend, Daylene R. Scott, of Sylvania; grandmother, Arline Magnuson (just celebrated her 90th birthday last Monday); parents, Douglas Col. US Army (ret.) and Shirley Ruane, of Tucson, AZ; brother, Kevin, of Atlanta, GA; sister, Marla (Brad) Roach, of Tucson, AZ along with their children, Jeffrey Frie, Paris Roach, Dane Roach and Ian Roach; two children from a previous marriage, Amanda (David) Smith and Arthur Ruane; as well as a grand host of friends. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Harry and Isabelle Ruane and his maternal grandfather, Earl Magnuson and his former spouse and mother of his two children, Kathy. Visitation will be held at the Reeb Funeral Home, 5712 N. Main St., Sylvania, on Monday, February 8, 2010 from 2-7 p.m., where the funeral service will be held on Tuesday at 2 p.m. Interment will follow at Toledo Memorial Park. Those wishing to give donations in Steve's memory are asked to please consider The Christopher and Dana Reeves Foundation, (which strives to improve the quality of life for people with paralysis through grants, information, and advocacy.) 636 Morris Turnpike, Suite 3A, Short Hills, NJ 07078.
