Robert MALEY Obituary

MALEY Robert Emery Jr. Dr. Robert Maley, age 64, of Toledo, passed away on Friday, May 21, 2010, at the University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor. He was born in Toledo, Ohio on November 23, 1945 at Flower Hospital to Robert E. Maley Sr. and Glenny V. Maley. Bob grew up in Toledo attending Sherman Elementary School, Wernert Grade School and graduated from Whitmer High School in 1963. He attended the University of Toledo College of Arts and Sciences receiving a Bachelor's of Science Degree in Chemistry in 1967. Bob was a member of Phi Kappa Psi social fraternity and the university branch of the YMCA. After graduating from the University of Toledo, Bob was accepted into the Dental School at the University of Michigan where he received the best education in the field that our country offered. Following graduation in 1971, he served with the United States Public Health Service attached to the Coast Guard in Elizabeth City, NC. It was there that his first child, Eric, was born. Upon returning to Toledo in 1973, Bob began his career in private practice on Monroe Street. His treatment philosophy was to treat others as he would want to be treated and that the true definition of a professional is placing their care ahead of personal interests. He was a member of the Toledo Dental Society, the Ohio Dental Association and the American Dental Association. Bob served as president in 1991 of the Toledo Dental Society. He also was involved in establishing a homeless clinic exclusive to dentistry, which was the first such clinic in the nation. He also served as vice-president of the Health Clinic International during this time. He continued to provide care throughout the AIDS epidemic scare when the cause/effect or safety of care providers was not entirely known. His love of Sand Lake in the Irish Hills enabled the family to make many life long relationships there from 1956 to the present day. His hobbies included golf, travel, sailing, snowmobiling, and anything new to experience. He was a member of St. Matthew's Episcopal Church and past Senior Warden of the Vestry. He was very blessed by the spiritual guidance of Father Joe and his late wife, Linda. Bob is survived by his wife of 42 years, Carol; mother, Glenny Maley; sons, Eric (Becky) and Matthew (Renee); daughter, Stephanie (Brian) Green; grandchildren, Evan and Kate Maley, Andrew and Blake Maley; brother, Jeff (Tonya) Maley; his dog, Chelsea; many nieces and nephews, and many friends. He was preceded in death by his father, Robert Maley Sr. Friends and family may visit at the Walker Funeral Home, 5155 W. Sylvania Ave., (west of Corey Rd.) on Monday from 4 to 8 p.m. A Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday at 11 a.m. at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, 5240 Talmadge Rd., Toledo, OH 43623. Memorial contributions may be made to the Cancer Research at University of Michigan, Comprehensive Cancer Center, 6316 Cancer Center, 1500 East Medical Center Dr., Ann Arbor, MI 48109 or St. Matthew's Episcopal Church. Dear Carol and all Bob’s family,

We’re so very sorry to learn of Bob’s death. On the few occasions, both joyous and sad, when we’ve had the opportunity to visit with Bob over the years, he was always so warm and welcoming. Such a kind man will be terribly missed, I’m sure. Andrea and Doug Whitmore, Fairway, KS

I am very saddened to learn of Brother Bob Maley's passing. We overlapped for two years in the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity, where he was a highly respected "older brother." And we overlapped for another two years at U of M, while he as at the Dental School and I was at the Law School. We did not stay in touch over the years, but I remember him as a very fine man and I regret to hear of his premature passing. My sincere condolences to Bob's family.

Sorry to hear of Dr. Bobs passing. I always enjoyed his chairside manor and he was a great dentist for me. I know two of his children, Matt and Stephanie and feel that Bob and his wife Carol did a fine job of bringing them up. Again sorry for your loss, he will be missed.
