Thomas Walter Brock, 81, died January 4, 2013, in Toledo. He was much-loved and will be greatly missed by his family. He was born in Marion, Indiana to Richard M. and Beulah Gransinger Brock on February 15, 1931. He lived in Jonesboro and graduated from Mississinewa High School in 1949. He earned his BA in Education, Ball State University; MS in Physics, University of Toledo. In 1951, he married Lois M. Robinson.
Mr. Brock joined Owens-Illinois in 1953 and spent his entire professional career there. He developed and headed the research team that cast the largest one piece telescope mirror in the world. Holding numerous patents, he also served as a NASA consultant. He was listed in Who's Who in America and presented papers and published articles in the Journal of American Ceramics, ASTM, and Optical Society of America.
In January 1982, he married Olive Jones Scholz and moved to Sedona, Arizona. Twice he served as Exalted Ruler of the Sedona Elks Lodge BPOE #2291 where his greatest joy was helping to serve 700-1000 Thanksgiving dinners each year. Sadly, Olive passed away in 2007 in Winchester, Oregon where they had moved because of her health.
In 2009, he returned to Toledo where he and Lois were remarried at Epworth United Methodist Church in 2010. The couple resided in Sylvania at Quarry's Edge.
Mr. Brock loved jazz, playing the clarinet in his high school band. In retirement, he learned to play the piano and took up wood carving, creating beautiful wood figurines of birds. He had a quiet, self-effacing personality and a dry sense of humor, loving to tease his grandchildren. He possessed a rare blood type and the Red Cross honored him for his generous donations of blood over the years, being on -call for emergency blood donations as far away as the Cleveland Clinic.
He is preceded in death by his parents, brother Richard Brock and sister Almira Davis. He is survived by his wife, Lois; daughter, Teri Swolsky, and son, Jeff Brock, both of Toledo; grandchildren, Keating and Ellie Brock, Alexandra Swolsky Joo (Chris) Ann Arbor, Catie Swolsky, Toledo; great-granddaughter, Marley McJennett; step-children, John, (Phoenix), Tom, (Boston) and Michelle (Berkeley) Scholz and numerous nephew and nieces.
Mr. Brock's ashes will be cast in the Pacific Ocean which he loved in the spring. The family suggests that donations be made to Epworth Methodist, 3077 Valley View, Toledo, OH 43615. A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
