Julie Bowers Obituary

BOWERS

Julie Ellen (Harshman)

Our dear sister, aunt, friend and teacher, Julie Ellen Bowers, age 72, has left us to cherish her beautiful memory. Julie died March 10, 2013, at Ebeid Hospice, Flower Hospital, after a brief and courageous battle with cancer.

Her kindness of heart and generosity of spirit will be sadly missed by the many people whose lives she touched.

Julie was born September 30, 1940, to Paul and Helen Harshman. She attended Rosary Cathedral, Central Catholic High School and received her BA in Education from Marquette University in 1962. Her post graduate studies included a masters degree from The University of Toledo and course work at Bowling Green State University.

Julie's 42-year career began as a French teacher at Cardinal Stritch High School and continued at Perrysburg High School. After retiring from there in 1996, she returned to the classroom to teach English and French at Northwood High School. Although she taught both languages, teaching French was her passion. She imparted her love for the language not only in her classroom, but also by leading over a dozen tours to France with her students.

Julie's love for learning continued into her later years. She was a volunteer for Read for Literacy and took several UT theology courses. She thoroughly enjoyed reading and her monthly book club. She also adored spending time with colleagues and lifelong friends, including three special friends she's kept since first grade.

Julie was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Paul (Bo) Harshman Jr. She is survived by brothers, Timothy (Mary Lourdes) Harshman, Daniel (Betty) Harshman of South Bend, IN; sister, Mary (Richard) Henning, and sister-in-law, Nancy Harshman. She also leaves behind nieces and nephews, Andy (Suzanne) Harshman, Erin (Mark) Mitchell, Casey (Molly) Harshman, Charlie (Kelli) Harshman, Kelly (Mark) Halmrast, Amy (Greg) Bechert, Meghan (John) Trowbridge, Heidi Harshman, Marty (Katie) Harshman, Tim Harshman, Carrie Henning, Tom (Betsy) Henning, Annie Henning, and 25 great-nieces and nephews upon all of whom she showered much love, compassion and QVC gifts. Lastly, she is survived by her beloved dog, Boo Radley.

We would like to thank the Ebeid Hospice staff for the kindness and care they showed Julie and her family.

I want to express my sympathy to Julie's family and friends. I taught French with Julie at Perrysburg High School in the 90's. She was so helpful to me as a new teacher and colleague and she graciously shared her classroom with me because I was a traveling teacher. I enjoyed chatting and laughing with her and her passion for teaching French motivated me. I will miss her!

Ms. Bowers was my 9th grade English teacher at PHS in 1970. I remember diagraming sentences and learning verb tenses and all that horrible stuff! She was a great teacher! I used what she taught me and went on to Ohio University and majored in Journalism. She was very kind with a soft voice. I've remembered her all these years. My sympathies to your family; she was a wonderful woman.

Sharing in your sadness and with deepest sympathy for all the Harshman family. Julie enlightened many lives and we are blessed for that! Sincerely, Dick & Kathleen Burnett

What a loss. Julie was the life of every party. She was generous to a fault and a very caring teacher. I taught with Julie and knew her for many, many years. We shared a love for the French language and culture. Her laughter will always be with me.
My sincere condolences in this time of grieving. My thoughts and prayers are with you.
