Born August 26, 1937, in Toledo, OH, he was the son of Melvin and Marie (Myers) Saunders. A US Air Force veteran, Bert joined the Toledo Fire Department on March 6, 1964. He served at Stations 7, 16, 24, and 25 before retiring on September 24, 1988. He followed in the footsteps of the Saunders Family that includes four generations of firefighters who served their communities. These firemen include his grandfather, uncle, father, brother, and nephew, Jay Saunders, who is presently employed in Toledo. Upon his tenure, Bert was hired as a Fire Safety Inspector for the State Fire Marshal's Office. As a dedicated employee and gentleman, he served as an Inspector from September 26, 1988 to February 12, 1999.

An active man, Bert was a supporter of the Toledo Firefighters Museum. He was a member of the Port Clinton Moose Lodge #1610. He enjoyed boating, golfing, and trips to Florida and Port Clinton. Above all, he loved his family and friends and made a genuine commitment to follow his grandchildren in any extracurricular activities.

He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Jan (Haley) Saunders; stepson, Jeffrey (Tammie) Adduci of Temperance, MI; grandchildren, Dominic, Vincenzo, and Anthony Adduci; brother, Jerry (Judith) Saunders of Haskins, OH, along with several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Bert was preceded in death by his son Brett Saunders at the young age of 20 and his brother Benjamin.

On Wednesday, March 27, 2013, Bert will be remembered at an 8:20 a.m. Mass at St Joseph Catholic Church in Sylvania, Ohio. The family will receive guests for a Memorial Service in the Chapel of Peace Mausoleum at Toledo Memorial Park, located at 6382 Monroe Street in Sylvania at 10:00 a.m. Msgr. Dennis Metzger will officiate. The Toledo Fire Department Retirees will conduct the Last Alarm Service. Interment will be conducted in a private setting at Toledo Memorial Park at a later time.
