PFAENDER

Lawrence "Larry" V.

Lawrence (Larry) V. Pfaender, 86, of Sylvania Township, passed away, with his loving family by his side, Monday, June 17, 2013, at the Hospice of Northwest Ohio, Perrysburg.

Larry was raised in Ottawa Hills, and after college and military service, married Donna Marie Coy, his Pi Beta Phi sweetheart from Toledo University, in 1950. Their blessed marriage of 63 years brought five children, four grandchildren, and one great-grandchild into their lives. Larry and Donna resided in Corey Woods and Sylvania Township during their life together. They were devout members of the St. Joseph parish in Sylvania.

Larry graduated from the University of Toledo (Alpha Sigma Phi) with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, and then joined Owens-Illinois, where he worked for more than 31 years. In 1984, he founded and served as Chairman and CEO of Sem-Com Company, Inc., where he was active until his final illness.

Larry's career focused on integrating glass and ceramic technology with rapidly advancing digital and electronic technology, a field in which he made major contributions. His innovative work resulted in 21 patents in his name, which included important advances in fiber optic and flat panel display technology.

He combined a zest for life with humility and grace to create a wonderful atmosphere and experience for his family, friends, and work colleagues. Birthday celebrations, summer vacations, and get-togethers of all kinds were imbued with a sense of adventure and fellowship that flowed naturally from his caring and friendly manner.

He was intensely patriotic, and his devotion to his country included serving in the U.S. Navy in WWII aboard the USS Severn, which participated in the battles of Leyte Gulf and Okinawa.

He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Donna Coy Pfaender; twin sons Michael and James (Katrina) Pfaender; daughters, Amie Dennis, Lynn Pfaender, and Beth (Philip) Ullom; grandchildren, Heather and Lisa Pfaender, Nathan (Kristie) Dennis and Caley Denni; great-grandson, Cameron Dennis, along with other nieces and a nephew. Larry was preceded in death by parents, Vernon and Ada (Cousino) Pfaender, and sisters, Maralyn Cannan and Carolyn Plummer.

Friends may call at the Reeb Funeral Home, 5712 N. Main St., Sylvania, OH, Thursday, June 20, 2013, from 4:00-8:00 p.m., where Scripture Services will begin at 7:30 p.m. The Funeral Mass will be conducted at the St. Joseph Catholic Church, Sylvania, Friday at 10:00 a.m.

The family requests that those wishing to offer memorials, in lieu of flowers, make a donation in Larry's name to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society or the Hospice of Northwest Ohio.
