Donald E. Schafer, age 94, passed away on Thursday, October 24, 2013 at Swan Creek Retirement Village in Toledo, OH. Don was born June 3, 1919, in Toledo, to Carl and Augusta Schafer. He was a graduate of Scott High School where he excelled in athletics, and later attended the University of Toledo where he was president of his fraternity, Alpha Phi Omega. Don served in WWII in the Army Air Corps stationed in Europe. Following the war, Don began a sales career with Enterprise Roofing and then bought Dersher Roofing and Sheet Metal in Toledo in 1953. He moved the company to Monroe in 1960. Don was a very active supporter of many causes in Monroe. He served as President of The Monroe Chamber of Commerce, Governor of Sertoma, and was an active Mason.
Don was energetic, enterprising, and non-judgmental. His warmth and easy smile allowed him to communicate his convictions without offending those with differing viewpoints. Don was a wonderful role model whom people wanted to emulate. He remained passionate about exercise and golf throughout his life, completing the Race for the Cure at 89 years old. At his home golf course in Florida, he shot his age at 79. He was also passionate about volunteering and spent 15 wonderful years as a volunteer at Flower Hospital. Don's faith was very important to him. He was a longtime member of Christ Presbyterian Church where he served as deacon, usher, and greeter.
