Harold "Harry" J.



Harold "Harry" J. Fillmore, 90, of Oak Harbor, died Tuesday, December 24, 2013, at Stein Hospice Care Center, Sandusky. He was born on October 16, 1923, in Elmore, OH to Carl J. and Matilda C. (Lieske) Fillmore. On August 19, 1978, in Clyde, OH he

married Ruth E. Griffin, and she preceded him in death

on June 17, 2011. Harry was

a U.S. Navy Veteran who served during World War II. He worked as the service manager for the Al Baumann Car Dealership in Fremont, OH for 32 years, retiring in 1989. During his retirement, he worked part time as an assistant for Robinson-Walker Funeral Home, Oak Harbor. Harry was a longtime member of the Oak Harbor V.F.W. Post #8732, where he served in many prominent positions, most notably Post Commander in 1953-1954 and 1984-1987. Harry was also a longtime member of St. Paul United Church of Christ, Oak Harbor, and a past Boy Scout Leader for 10 years. He

enjoyed camping and woodworking, especially making flag cases for veterans. He also enjoyed playing the role of Uncle Sam in the Apple Festival parade in recent years. Harry helped organize the project to build the

Veterans Circle of Remembrance at Union Cemetery in Oak Harbor, dedicated in 2001. On April 16, 2012, Harry was honored as Ottawa County Veteran of the Year for 2011; becoming the first veteran in Ottawa County to receive this honor. On November 8, 2012, Harry was inducted into the Ohio Veterans Hall of Fame.

Harry is survived by his children, Lauren (Glenda) Fillmore of San Antonio, Texas, Diane (Scott) Meckfessel of Oak Harbor, and Janet Schmidt (Jeff Cluckey) of Bono, Ohio; 5 grandchildren, Shawn (MaryJo) Meckfessel, Sarah (Brad) Harvey, Jeremy (Kelly) Tailford, Ryan (Jamie Steinecker) Tailford, and Melissa (James) Losie; 13 great-grandchildren; step-children, Rebecca (Gale) McClure of Spencerville, OH, Daniel (Cher) Griffin of

Merida, Mexico, Jacquelyn (Lloyd) Stout of Montrose, California, and Christopher Griffin of Wooster, OH; 6 step-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his

parents; wife; brother,

Donald Fillmore, and sister, Doris Bast.

Visitation will be on Friday, December 27, 2013, from 2-8 p.m. at the Robinson-Walker Funeral Home & Crematory, Oak Harbor. Funeral services will be

conducted by Pastor Kyle Timmons at 11 a.m.,

Saturday, December 28, 2013, at St. Paul United Church of Christ, Oak Harbor.

Interment will be in Union Cemetery, Oak Harbor with full military graveside honors. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given in memory of Harry to Wounded Warriors or the V.F.W. National Home for Children, 3573 S. Waverly Rd., Eaton Rapids, MI 48827. Online condolences may be shared with the family at
