Raymond Wolford Jr., 72, passed away January 19, 2014, at Hospice of Northwest Ohio on S. Detroit Avenue. Born in Toledo, he was a 1960 graduate of Scott High School where he played varsity basketball. He later graduated from University of Toledo with his Bachelor's Degree and continued his studies nearly completing his Masters. Ray retired from the Toledo Police Department as a detective working in the Crime Prevention Bureau and the Juvenile Division. He was also the proprietor of Wolford Security Services.
Over the years, he attended Warren A.M.E. Church and Ascension Lutheran. Ray was a lifetime member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity and lifetime member and of the NAACP and Golden Heritage. He was later honored by induction in the City League Hall of Fame, Alumni Hall of Fame of Scott High School and University of Toledo Athletic Hall of Fame. In 1967 he married Heather Blanks Wolford, who remained his devoted friend and caregiver until his passing. Ray was well known as a fan of the Cleveland Indians and Ohio State University.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Hazel Wolford, and sister, Louella Thompson. He leaves to cherish his memory sister, Ila Bryant of Mansfield, OH; devoted friend and caregiver, Heather Wolford; special friends, Mike Smythe, Genie Rosebrock, Sandy and Dave Flick; his nieces, nephews, and other friends.
Visitation will be Wednesday 5-7 p.m. including Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity rites, family hour Thursday 11 a.m. followed by funeral services at 12:00 noon Dale-Riggs Funeral Home Chapel, Elder Phillip L. Miller officiant, interment Forest Cemetery.
