Sr Mary Christelle, SND (Mary Catherine)

On Tuesday, March 11, after sixty-two years of dedicated service to the Church and to the community, Sister Mary Christelle gave back her soul to the God she served so well. Mary Catherine grew up in Toledo in the family of Frances Marie Curtiss and Henry Roesner. She absorbed her father's love and skill for gardening, cultivating flowers and caring for little kittens and found great satisfaction in all things beautiful in nature. Together with her four brothers and sister, she attended Gesu School. She graduated from Notre Dame Academy.

In 1950, Mary Catherine joined the Sisters of Notre Dame, and became known as Sister Mary Christelle. After her graduation from Mary Manse College, she went to the University of Notre Dame where she received her masters in Chemistry. She loved teaching and valued her interaction with students in her classes. Sister Mary Christelle's early assignments were in the elementary schools soon followed by many years in the high schools of the diocese of Toledo: Immaculate Conception, Bellevue; St. John, Delphos; St. Paul, Norwalk; St. Joseph, Maumee; St. Mary, Sandusky; St. Wendelin, Fostoria; and Christ the King, St. Mary, St. Ann, Central Catholic and Notre Dame Academy in Toledo. Sister Mary Christelle also spent six months in an immersion experience in Papua, New Guinea. In 1995, she left the classroom and began tutoring high school students in physics and in math. However, in 2012, because of deteriorating health, she was transferred to Ursuline Center on Indian Road where she died on Tuesday morning.

Preceding her in death are her parents and her brother, Henry. Left to mourn her passing are her brothers, Joseph (Delores), Paul (Kathleen) and Mark (Virginia) in Australia, and her sister, Rita Zita (Tony) in Maryland and many friends and her religious sisters.

Visitation will be at the Notre Dame Provincial Center on Secor Road on Thursday, March 13, from 3:00 - 8:00 p.m. with Sharing of Memories at 7:00 p.m. The funeral liturgy will be celebrated at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, March 14, in the Provincial Center Chapel. The burial service will begin at 9:30 a.m. at Resurrection Cemetery on Saturday morning.
