Sophie M.

Sophie M. Brzozka, 93 years, of Temperance, MI departed this life, in her sleep, Wednesday, April 23, 2014, in Hospice of Northwest Ohio, Perrysburg. The daughter

of Vincent and Catherine (Slomowicz) Czubachowski, she was born January 20, 1921, in Toledo, OH. She was the widow of Chester J. Brzozka, who died in 1980. She lived and worked in the Polish Village neighborhood most of her life, until moving to the Luther Haus in

Temperance in 2006. Sophie owned and operated the Checker Café, a.k.a. "Soph's Place" at the corner of Maple and Pearl Streets and retired in 1990, after 43 years of working at her North Toledo landmark bar. She even had a half page article printed in The Toledo Blade "Living Today" Section about her when she retired. The Checker Café sponsored

softball and bowling teams through the 50s, 60s and 70s and was the meeting place

for neighborhood men who served in Korea, Vietnam and worked at Jeep. She enjoyed talking and being with the neighborhood people and was always there to listen to all their troubles, problems with relationships or shoot a

competitive game of pool.

Sophie loved to travel with her sisters, cousins and nieces. The highlight of her travels was a 24 day trip through British Columbia, the Yukon and Alaska. She loved to go to VFW dances, play cards, bingo and attend family gatherings. She

always took the lead in

organizing the next card game, card party or dance at the Luther House.

She is survived by her loving daughter-in-law, Barbara Brzozka of Ft. Mill, SC; grandchildren, Scot (Kelly) Brzozka of Lambertville, Brian (Jennifer) Brzozka of Ft.
