Morton Bobowick Obituary

BOBOWICK

Morton

Morton "Morty" Bobowick passed away peacefully on July 25, 2014, from cancer. His quick wit, boundless knowledge, deep compassion, and generous spirit will be greatly missed, but he will remain forever young at heart.

Born October 8, 1942, in Brooklyn, NY to Norman and Shirley Bobowick, Morty grew up rooting for the Dodgers and watching boats at the Coney Island lighthouse. At 15, he volunteered with the Student Conversation Association in Olympic National Park. The lessons he learned there - of teamwork, a collective sense of accomplishment, and a commitment to conservation - lasted a lifetime.

In his 1959 valedictorian speech from Abraham Lincoln High School, Morty said, "The most important product of education should be a student with the ability to think for himself. The student must not rely upon the ideas and beliefs of others as a pattern for his own, but must carefully weigh all elements of the problem and derive an answer on his own."

Morty graduated magna cum laude in 1962 from Brooklyn College, where he was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. In 1965, he graduated from Harvard Law School cum laude and married Susan Beth Liber. They moved to Washington, DC, where he worked for the Civil Aeronautics Board. In 1966, he moved to Dayton and clerked for the US Court of Appeals. In 1968, he moved to Toledo, where he joined Eastman & Smith and practiced law until 2010. He was a member of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel.

Whatever Morty did, he did with gusto. In his booming voice, he would recite from memory great literature. No gathering was complete without a sing-along led by Morty. He was an avid tennis player, skier, and biker. Together, Morty and Sue enjoyed bridge, gourmet group, trail patrol at Wildwood Metropark, global travel, and visits with their children in Portland, OR and Washington, DC.

He was a loving husband to Susan; an encouraging father to Marla and Michelle; a supportive father-in-law to Mort Rolleston and Chuck Veneklase; a silly grandpa to Rose and Roger; a beloved brother to Rita Barga, and a dear friend to many.

A memorial service will be held at Temple Shomer Emunim on July 28 at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, please send contributions to the Student Conservation Association (www.thesca.org), Jewish Federation of Greater Toledo, or Hospice of Northwest Ohio.

Arrangements by the Robert H. Wick/ Wisniewski Funeral Home (419-535-5840).

I worked with Morty in 1958 when we were members of the Student Conservation Association in Olympic National Park. We met again when he and Sue came to visit in Port Angeles, Washington. We hiked to Humes Ranch where we'd been based 41 years earlier.
We kept in touch, but I didn't see him again until shortly before he died when my wife and I visited him and Sue for a short time one afternoon. Had I known he would be leaving us so young, I'd have stayed closer. I miss him.
The photo is of Morty and me at Humes Ranch in 1999.

To all family, loved ones, fiends, and
colleagues, my deepest condolences on
the passing of Morton Bobowick. I was fortunate to benefit from his exceedingly wise counsel and superlative professional abilities.
The sweeping command and expertise that
he provided to his clients was only
exceeded by the kindness, warmth,
patience and unrelenting humor that he readily extended to all that had the great fortune of making his acquaintance. Mort will deeply be
missed, but never forgotten.
