Howard Goldstein Obituary

Howard Goldstein EWING - Howard Goldstein passed away Monday, Aug. 12, 2013. Howard was born in the Bronx, NY, and spent much of his time at his father's Yiddish theater where he met many of the stars of the day. In high school, he was very active in sports, and was the class artist. After graduation, Howard went on to earn a teaching degree at Buffalo State and a degree in fine arts at the Albright Art School. There, he had many inspiring art teachers who changed his way of seeing forever, to go beyond literal interpretations of nature and see objects as basic compositional elements. Upon graduation, Howard went into the Army, where he served in the Alaska Defense Command. He helped form an art group there and had his first one man show in Anchorage. After the Army, Howard taught in East Meadow, Long Island, NY, and, in 1960, came to Trenton to join the art department faculty at the College of New Jersey. Howard taught there until 1994, serving as chairman of the art department from 1980 to 1994. During this time, he earned his master's degree from NYU and his doctorate at Columbia University. Under Governor Richard Hughes, Howard led the commission to study the arts in New Jersey, which led to the formation of the New Jersey State Council on the Arts. Howard had many one person shows in New Jersey and New York. He had a retrospective exhibition in the Trenton City Museum in 1989 and one at Rider College in 2009. His group showings included the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Ball State University, the New Jersey State Museum, The Butler Institute of American Art, Rundstern Museum in Copenhagen, Denmark, Columbia University, Schering-Plough Corp. Gallery, Western Electric Corp., and many more. Howard won many awards, including first prize for painting in the Emily Lowe Foundation Competition, honorable mention for painting in the New York City Center Gallery, New Jersey Tercentenary Award, Videorecord Corporation of America Award, the Governor of New Jersey Purchase Award-Art from New Jersey, and many others. Howard was a member from its inception to the present of the Mercer County Cultural and Heritage Commission. He also joined the acting group, Shakespeare 70, in 1984 and appeared in a variety of roles. He was recently honored by the Alumni Association of Buffalo State College, receiving the Senior Service Award, an award presented for giving time to help others create positive changes within the community. Howard and his wife were world travelers, having visited countries in North and South America, Europe, Asia, Africa, and Australia. He was also a devoted fan of the New York Giants and the Yankees, and loved to attend the games in person with his family. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Marilyn; a daughter and son-in-law, Marcia and Trey Kraus, and a son and daughter-in-law, Brian and Nicolette Goldstein. His happiest moments were spent with his loving grandchildren, James Goldstein and Zachary Kraus. Relatives and friends are invited are invited to attend the funeral service on Thursday 11 a.m. at Orland's Ewing Memorial Chapel, 1534 Pennington Rd., Ewing Township. Burial will follow at Fountain Lawn Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests memorial contributions be offered to a charity of the donor's choice.

Marilyn, Marcia and Brian. Although this is delayed, I wanted to let you know how sorry we all were to hear of your loss. I know my parents shared many fond memories with you as friends, neighbors, lovers of the arts, and even colleagues. I hope that your wonderful memories will ease the pain with the passing of time and that you can look at the tremendous legacy Howard left in his body of work as a true testament to the passionate artistic spirit that he was.

Our thoughts and sympathy go out to you all: Marilyn, Marcia, and Brian and families. For me, and perhaps my sisters, most of our memories of Howard were children's memories, so we thought of him and Marilyn mainly as our parents' friends. That changed for me one day a couple of years ago, at my own dad's shiva, when I had the most interesting conversation with Howard (and also with Marilyn). It was the first (and unfortunately the last) time I had ever really gotten to know him. We talked for a long time about his acting career which I had never known about and never would have guessed since I knew only of his talents in art. During that conversation, I got a glimpse into his warmth, depth, and wry "city" humor and saw-now through adult eyes-what made him such a great friend to my parents for so many decades. My dad and Howard came to Trenton State when it was a very different and much smaller school. Their respective careers grew as the college grew. I think Howard always represented for my Dad the "road not taken" if he had gone into art as his primary vocation rather than physics. My impression is that Howard and my dad spurred one another on to greater achievement and involvement in exhibits. Until I read his obituary, I had no idea of the breadth of his recognition and accomplishments in the world of art in NJ and beyond. Howard was a classic personality in our neighborhood and circle of friends and one where his New York roots could never be erased by Jersey suburbia. It will be difficult to drive down Rockleigh Drive without looking for Howard jogging. I will personally miss him and hope you all find comfort in all the great memories of such a rare man.

Marilyn, Howard was such a force of nature. I'm very sorry to hear about his passing. I still have his voice in my head despite having been his student decades ago. He was a generous and dedicated teacher.
