Preston Lee Phillips

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Preston Lee Phillips was born on Dec. 20, 1920, to his parents, Ernest Lee Phillips and Mary Francis Reed.
He passed away Sunday, Feb. 10, 2013. He attended Gloucester Training School and during high school worked cutting timber with his father. In 1940 at the age of 20, he moved to Steubenville, Ohio. He lived with his sister, Augustine Terry, and her husband, Cartrell Terry. While in Steubenville, he worked several years in the dry cleaning business. In 1944, he moved to Philadelphia, he met his first wife, Hazel Lee and moved to Trenton, N.J. and began working for General Motors in 1954. Their marriage gave birth to two boys, Preston Phillips Jr. and Shelton Phillips. He continued to work and live in Trenton until 1979. During the time in Trenton, he experienced a divorce and met his second wife, Evelyn Harris. In February 1979, he retired from General Motors and he and Evelyn moved back to Shacklefords, Va. He enjoyed many years of retirement there while boating, fishing and hunting with his many friends at the Tri County Hunting Club.
He was preceded in death by sisters, Helen Davenport, Margie Driver, Hattie Carey and Augustine Terry, and by his wife, Evelyn Phillips. He is survived by sons, Preston Phillips Jr. and Shelton Phillips, a sister, Emma Jane Wiggins (John), and a long list of nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be at noon Friday (Feb. 22) at the First Baptist Church of Hockley, Shacklefords, Va. Interment in the church cemetery. The viewing will be from 11 a.m. to noon Friday at the church. Condolences and flowers may be sent to the J.K. Redmond Funeral Home, 3632 Lewis B. Puller Memorial Highway, Shacklefords, Va. 23156.
