Robert F. Pickell

FLEMINGTON - Robert F. Pickell, age 78 years, of Flemington, died Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2012, in The Pavilion at Forrestal, Princeton.
Born in Trenton, April 10, 1934, son of the late Jacob Pickell and Helen Wyckoff Pickell Olenick, he had resided in the Flemington area all his life except for 10 years in Florida before returning to Flemington in 2000.
He was a well-known, successful race car driver, especially stock cars, and won countless races during his racing career. He also raced in the Daytona 500. He was inducted into the Flemington Speedway Hall of Fame and also the Garden State Hall of Fame. For many years, he owned and operated Flemington Glass Co., retiring 25 years ago.
Surviving are his wife, Connie Ploski Pickell; a son, Robert L. Pickell of New Egypt; a daughter, Brenda Pickell of Norfolk, Va.; his former wife, Carol Higgins of Norfolk, Va.; four brothers, William Pickell of Branchville, Jack Pickell of Farmville, Va., Paul Olenick of High Bridge, and Charles Olenick of Atlanta, Ga.; two step-daughters, Renee Melbourn of Chicago and Deanna Cadic of Flemington; four grandchildren, Nicholas Pickell, Jessica Schnitzler, Brittany Hensley and Eric Melbourn, and one great-grandchild, Mya Schnitzler.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Oct. 13, 2012, at 10 a.m. at the Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home, 147 Main St., Flemington, followed by interment in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Flemington. Calling hours will be Friday 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.
