LAMBERTVILLE - Russell "Robert" Brown, 71, died Sunday, May 19, 2013, at the Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia.
A lifelong resident of Lambertville Bob was a member of St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church. For many years he was a self employed house painter and wall paper hanger and recently he began a trucking company hauling construction materials. Bob enjoyed snowmobiling at his vacation home in Rangeley, Maine.
He joined the Lambertville Ambulance Association in 1962 which is currently known as the Lambertville-New Hope Rescue Squad and had served as its president for six years. He served as chief/captain of the organization during the 1970s and was a member of its world champion heavy rescue teams of the 1960s. Bob was the acting chief/captain during the Lambertville gas explosion of Oct. 5, 1970, and assisted in various ways during that tragedy. For 12 years he held the position of vice chairman for the Lambertville Fire Commission.
He served on various ambulance purchasing committees, assisted in the design of the current rescue boat and was past vice president in charge of building and grounds. He was instrumental in the construction of the Lambertville-New Hope Rescue Squad Building and Banquet Hall on Alexander Avenue. In 2012 he was recognized for his 50 years of service to the organization.
Son of the late Elizabeth Myers and stepson of the late Dory Myers, brother of the late Gerry Brown, he is survived by his wife, Susan Vogelsang Brown; one son, Robert Brown and his wife Diane of Flemington, one daughter, Tiffany Kuhl and her husband Todd; beloved granddaughters, Samantha, Skylar and Addison Kuhl, and beloved grandson, Christopher Pantusto; and one step- sister, Doreene Richardson in Montana.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 22, at 8 p.m. at Garefino Funeral Home, 12 N. Franklin St., Route 179, Lambertville. Graveside services will be held Thursday, May 23, at 11:30 a.m. at St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday from 6 p.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home.
