Dr. Maurita Miles Hinton

Dr. Maurita Miles Hinton, PhD, 86, died on Saturday, March 23, 2013 at her residence.
Born in Orange, Dr. Hinton was a resident of Trenton for most of her life and graduated from Trenton Central High School. She continued her education and earned a Bachelor's Degree in Education at Storer College, Harper's Ferry, W. VA, Masters Degree at Hampton Institute, Hampton, VA and was the first Black woman to receive PhD in Educational Administration from Syracuse University.
Dr. Hinton was previously employed as a public school teacher, Supervisor for National Teachers Corp at Temple University and as Supervisor of Teachers and University Professors, training prospective school administrators at UCLA. After 30 years in education, she became an independent career consultant. Dr. Hinton was a member of Cadwalader Asbury United Methodist Church.
She was also a member of the National Conference of Professors of Educational Administration, National Organization on Legal Problems in Education, American Education Research Association, NAACP, Southern Poverty Law Center, President of UMW at Cadwalader Asbury and many other organizations.
She was predeceased by her husband, David Hinton, parents, William Miles and Mary (Cottman) Miles and siblings, Brice, Homer, Esther and Bessie . She is survived by one sister; Blanche Miles Fleming; one brother; Thomas Cottman Miles; nephews; Daniel E. Fleming (Cheryl); and Harwood Hines; nieces; Faye Hines Hall; Gloria Hinton Taylor; and Shirley Corsey; special godson; Rev. David Tokpah; special caregiver; Raquel Turner and a host of grandnephews; grandnieces; other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday (Mar. 30) 11 a.m. at Cadwalader Asbury United Methodist Church, 900 Stuyvesant Ave. Rev. David Tokpah officiating; Rev. Dr. LaGretta J. Bjorn, pastor. Calling hours from 9 a.m. until time of service at the church. Interment will be at Greenwood Cemetery, Hamilton Twp., NJ.
