Albert Thomas Witcher

Obituary Condolences

Albert Thomas Witcher ,91, was born in Trenton on August 7th 1921 and departed this life on July 18. 2013. He was the son of Albert Vernon Witcher and Stella Grover Witcher. He graduated from Central High School in 1939 and served in the army during WWII with the military police. In 1948 he married Verna Lee Nevius of Hopewell Boro and settled in the Sourland Mountains of Hopewell Twp. He cleared the land and planted a garden that was admired for years and began his career at the United Engine Rebuilders. He started his career doing piece work then moved on to Supervisor. He later became a Sales Representative landing major accounts with American Airlines and Frito-Lay, and ended his career as a Manager. In "retirement" Albert worked for the Flemington Car and Truck Country, cared for his wife and performed community service.
He was a Trustee of the First Baptist Church of Pennington, President of the Pennington African Cemetery Association and member of the Sourland Planning Council. In 2004 Pennington Boro awarded him a Certificate of Appreciation in recognition for his work in the Pennington African Cemetery. The Pennington Shade Tree Commission planted a Burr Oak in his honor in the Sked St. Park. He was also awarded the Griot Award by Kitchen Table News at IMPACT 2004 for the Preservation of African-American History, and was honored in 2010 by the First Baptist Church for his lifelong dedication.
Albert was a beloved husband, father, uncle, cousin and friend. In addition to his parents, Albert was predeceased by sisters, Marion Witcher Burnett (Charles Burnett) and Edythe Witcher Boyer (Fred Boyer Jr.). He is survived by daughters; Suzen Alberta Witcher and Angela Lynn Witcher-Harrison (Bruce Harrison); a son; Thomas Elwood Witcher; grandchildren; James Wesley Smith and Bruce Albert Harrison; 12 nieces, nine nephews; several close cousins including the Grover and Nevius families.
Funeral Services will be Wednesday (July 24) at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church of Pennington 5 Academy Ave Pennington, NJ 08534. Viewing hours will be Tuesday (July 23) from 6-8 p.m. and Wednesday from 9-11am at the church. Interment will be in Highland Cemetery, Hopewell.
