WILLINGBORO - Don Allen Smith, 74, of Willingboro, departed this life on Thursday, April 25, 2013, at Lourdes Medical Center of Burlington County.|
Born in Montgomery, Ala., Don relocated to Cleveland, Ohio, with his family. Don graduated from high school in Cleveland, and in 1960 he graduated from Central State University in Ohio where he was a member of the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity. Don graduated from the U.S. Army Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) program where he was designated as a Distinguished Military Graduate, the highest honor, given to only the top 20 percent of ROTC cadets in the nation. Don was commissioned as a First Lieutenant in the United States Army upon his graduation from college. During his military career, Don served in many leadership positions and one of his greatest achievements was as a commander of an infantry company during the Vietnam War. Don relocated to New Jersey in the early 70s when he was transferred to Fort Dix.
Once Don moved to New Jersey he transitioned to the Army Reserve, and he then began his professional career with the City of Trenton. He was the founder of DONALITH Real Estate Investment where he spent the rest of his career.
He was predeceased by his parents, Hiram and Clara Smith. Surviving are a son, Keith Jerome Smith of Trenton; grandson, Trevor Smith and granddaughter, Rachel Smith of Celina, Ohio; numerous relatives and friends. He will be greatly missed.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, May 1, at 12:30 p.m. at the Campbell Funeral Chapel, 1225 Calhoun St., Trenton, NJ 08638. Interment will be in Brig. Gen. William C Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Arneytown. Calling hours will be Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the chapel.
