Dr.  Edna B. Szeker Obituary
Dr. Edna B. Szeker HAMILTON - Edna B. Szeker passed away on September 6, 2013. Recently of Shelton, CT, she was born in Trenton and resided in Hamilton, NJ, for sixty-six years. She was the daughter of the late Herman L. and Anna Hancin Bickel, and sister of the late Dorothy Bickel Szeker. She was the devoted wife of the late Ernest T. Szeker, Sr. Dr. Szeker was the mother of the late Jeffrey and the late Marjorie Ann (Marn) Szeker, who, following her mother's example in teaching and coaching, was a beloved art teacher and swim coach at The Hun School of Princeton. Dr Szeker was a graduate of Trenton High School. Following graduation, she was recruited to work at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., providing administrative support to ranking generals during WWII. Edna possessed a lifelong love of education and after raising her three children, she entered college pursuing a BA and then an MA in Health and Physical Education. She later earned an MA in Student Personnel Services (Guidance) and attained a Principal/Supervisor Certification. In 1992 Dr. Szeker achieved an Ed.D. with a practicum in cross-age tutoring. Dr. Szeker taught in many schools throughout the Hamilton School System including Reynolds Middle School, Hamilton High West and Lalor, Yardville Heights, Mercerville and Morgan Elementary Schools. She was a member of NJEA, NEA and a lifetime member of the Mercer County Retired Education Association. She was a strong believer in the concept of peer support in the schools and established programs such as cross-age tutoring. She retired in 1998, after thirty years as a teacher, a coach and later a guidance counselor. A life-long athlete and sports' enthusiast, she was active in local women's basketball and softball leagues, and was a member of Pop Hoagland's Majorettes Championship Teams. She continued her love of sports after moving to Hamilton where she was instrumental in organizing community basketball leagues for adult women. She also supervised "Learn to Swim" programs for area youth and gave private swimming and diving lessons. She was a swim official in NJSIAA and officiated in high school swim meets. After attaining her degree in physical education, she went on to coach girls' varsity basketball and field hockey at Hamilton High West. She followed local sports as well as supporting her favorite Phillies and Seventy-Sixer teams. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother who took pride and joy in the many accomplishments of her family. She is survived by her two sons and their spouses, Ernest and Joan Szeker, Jr. of Brigantine NJ and Herman and Nancy Szeker of Shelton, CT. Also surviving are precious grandchildren, Jeffrey and wife Brooke of Absecon, NJ, Jennifer of Philadelphia, Anne and husband Leif Detlefsen of Jacksonville, FL, Thomas of Shelton and Claire of Wakefield, RI, great grandchildren Jillian and Ryan of Absecon, and Jacob and Andrew of Jacksonville as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins. She is also survived by her special niece Dorene Szeker of Atco, NJ and her long time friends Ginny Prouty of Thompson, CT, and Audrey Vernon, Joyce Trani and Ginger Rubino of Hamilton NJ. Funeral service will be Thursday at 10:30 AM at Kingston & Kemp Funeral Home, 260 White Horse Ave., Hamilton (www.KingstonandKemp.com) Interment will follow in Greenwood Cemetery, Hamilton. Relatives and friends may call on Wednesday from 6 to 9 PM at the funeral home.
