HAMILTON - J. George Lekko Sr., 86, of Hamilton died Friday, October 25, 2013, at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital at Hamilton.
Born in Red Jacket, W.Va., he had lived in the Trenton area for more than 60 years. He was a member of the St. Nicholas Young Peoples Club where he met his wife of 62 years, Sylvia. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II having served on the heavy cruiser USS Oregon City as a part of the gun crew. Mr. Lekko was a member of St. Nicholas Byzantine Catholic Church. He served as a cantor for the church and was a member of the Holy Name Society. He won the Trentonian Bowling Tournament along with his brother-in-law, Henry Korchick, in 1963. Mr. Lekko worked as an electrician at U.S. Steel for more than 25 years and also worked as a Supervisor of Facilities Maintenance at NJ Porcelain for 15 years.
He was predeceased by his parents, Stephen Lekka and Julia Mosolygo, his wife, Sylvia Zimmerman, and his son, John Lekko Jr. He is survived by his children and their spouses, Karen Belcher, Dale and Thomas Smith, Sylvia Koester, and George and Emily Lekko. He is also survived by his brother, Alec Lecco; and his 12 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, in addition to many cousins.
Relatives and friends are invited to share their condolences with the family on Tuesday, October 29, from 5 to 8 p.m. and from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, October 30, at the Kutch Funeral Home, 215 Grand St., Trenton. Office of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Assumption of the Virgin Mary Byzantine Catholic Church, Grand and Malone streets, Trenton. Burial will follow in St. Nicholas Byzantine Catholic Cemetery in Hamilton.
