John R. Prihoda

Obituary Condolences

John R. Prihoda, 89, of Trenton, died Tuesday July 16, 2013 at St. Joseph's Skilled Nursing Center. He was born in Trenton and was a lifelong resident.
Mr. Prihoda was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps. He served in the Marines during World War II and made several landings in the South Pacific, one under fire at Iwo Jima. He was former Chief of Police of the City of Trenton from 1970 through 1990. He was the youngest to be named Chief of Police at the age of 48 and was the longest serving Chief for the City.
He participated in many organizations throughout his life. He founded and was the first Commandant of the Marine Corp League – Trenton Detachment; was a Past Commandant of the NJ Marine Corp League; a 50 year member of the Trenton Knights of Columbus; and Chairman of the Trenton Parking Authority. He was a member of the Trenton PBA local 11; the Trenton PBA Superior Officers Association; the NJ State Retired Police and Fireman's Association; the Mercer County Local 12 and the International Association of Chiefs of Police. Mr. Prihoda was also a member of the Catholic War Veterans Post 417; the Central Jersey Antique Car Club; the Slovak Community Home and the American Hungarian Civic Association.
Mr. Prihoda was predeceased by his parents John and Anna Prihoda, and his two sisters Mary Prihoda and Anna Agocs. He is survived by his wife of 65 years; P. Emily Bacsik Prihoda; his four sons and three daughters-in-law; John and Audrey; Francis X.; Robert and Katherine; and Richard and Kimberly Prihoda. He is also survived by his grandchildren; Sarah and her husband Sean; Tracy; Francis Jr. and his wife Jessica; Christopher; Kevin; Robert; Stephen; Michael; Karen; Matthew and Jonathan and great-granddaughter; Kyra.
Viewing hours will be Friday (July 19) from 5-8 p.m. at Kutch Funeral Home, 215 Grand Street, Trenton, NJ 08611. On Friday there will be a Knights of Columbus service; and a service by the Marine Corp League. Mass Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday (July 20) at 10 a.m. at Divine Mercy Parish, Holy Cross Church, 201 Adeline Street, Trenton. Burial will follow in St. Mary Byzantine Catholic Cemetery No. 2 in Hamilton.
