YARDLEY, Pa. - Ernest A. "Ernie" Sbarro, 84, Prudential Agent Emeritus, of Yardley, passed away peacefully on Sunday, Jan. 6, 2013, at Saint Mary's Medical Center, Langhorne.|
Born in Irvington, N.J., in 1928, Ernie moved to Trenton, N.J., in 1936, and later to Yardley, in 1960. He was a graduate of Trenton Central High School in 1946, and attended Rider College for one year. He attained a degree in business administration from LaSalle Extension University out of Chicago.
Ernie was employed by his father at the age of 12 in the family restaurant known as Tony Goes in the Chambersburg section of Trenton, N.J. The name was later changed to The Casino Restaurant. He co-owned it with his sister Mary Maccaroni until 1968. He left the restaurant business and joined the Prudential Insurance Company and worked as a division manager until his retirement in 2011. He achieved the insurance designations of Chartered Life Underwriter, Chartered Financial Consultant, and then received a master's degree in financial services from the American College in Bryn Mawr.
He was an avid sports enthusiast known for his bowling prowess in the 1950s. He had nine 700+ series during his career when he retired from bowling in 1961. At the age of 50, he took up the game of tennis and became a devout fan of the sport, participating in tennis leagues with competitors 25 years his junior. He also enjoyed sailing the American and British Virgin Islands with his wife Jean and friends. He loved life, music and dancing, early films, boxing, big bands, the New York Yankees (with Mickey Mantle), the New York Giants (with Phil Sims), Frank Sinatra, Barbra Streisand and all the great vocalists of that era. Most of all he enjoyed his family.
Predeceased by his parents, Canio and Theresa D'Amelio Sbarro, his beloved wife of 60 years, Genzina "Jennie" "Jean" L. Massari Sbarro, his brothers and their wives, Mike and Rae, Jim and Tessie, his close uncle and wife, Lou and Rosa D'Amelio, he is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Richard and Janet Sbarro of Hamilton, N.J. and Nicholas and Marie Sbarro of Yardley; a sister and brother-in-law, Mary and Gino Maccaroni; his brother and sister-in-law, Albert and Joan Sbarro, his sister-in-law, Mildred Massari; his grandchildren and their spouses, Nicholas T. and Christine Sbarro, Matthew and Shannon Sbarro, Nicole and Kevin Brown, Richard J. and Shelly Sbarro and Brian and Dana Sbarro; 10 great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
The funeral will be held on Friday (Jan. 11) at 8:30 a.m. from the Brenna Funeral Home, 340 Hamilton Ave., Trenton, N.J. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday at 10 a.m. at Saint Ignatius Church, Reading Ave., Yardley, PA 19067. Entombment will follow in Our Lady of Lourdes Madonna Mausoleum, Hamilton, N.J.
Calling hours for family and friends will be on Thursday (Jan. 10) from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Brenna Funeral Home.
