Samuel Dwight Vandivort Jr., 75, of Avon Lake, formerly of Lakewood, passed away Wednesday, July 23, 2014, at St. Mary of the Woods, Avon, Ohio.

Mr. Vandivort was born Aug. 25, 1938, in DuBois and was a graduate of Reynoldsville High School. He attended Johns Hopkins University, then transferred to John Carol University where he earned a Bachelor's of Science Degree in chemistry. He put his education to good use as a chemist with the Eveready Products Corporation, Cleveland and eventually retired as one of the company's owners.
Mr. Vandivort was a member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks and Holy Spirit Church, Avon Lake, Ohio. After retirement he and his wife, Shirley, enjoyed traveling.
He is survived by his children: Samuel D. (Catherine) Vandivort III of Henderson, Nev.; JoAnne (James) Collins of Germantown; Theresa (John) Griffin of Lakewood and Margaret (Brian) Stephens of Aurora, Colo. Other survivors include 10 grandchildren: Kara, Jenna, Amanda, James, Margaret, Molly, Anthony Joseph, Robert, Hunter and Nicholas and a sister, Lois Leach (Robert-dec.).
Samuel is preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Shirely Ann (nee DaMore) and parents Samuel Dwight and Carrie J.(nee Ramsey) Vandivort, Sr.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be at Holy Spirit Church, 410 Lear Road., Avon Lake, Ohio at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 2, 2014, at the church. Fr. James Beatty of the church will officiate.
Interment will follow at St. Joseph Cemetey, Avon, Ohio.
