John M. Hughes III, 80, of Greensburg, died Sunday, Sept. 8, 2002, in Westmoreland Regional Hospital, Greensburg. He was born March 21, 1922, in Parkersburg, W.Va., the son of the late John M. Jr. and Ruth Alice (Sumney) Hughes. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Joan Elizabeth (Watt) Hughes; and two infant granddaughters, Jessica Marie and Alexis Irene Marie Hughes. Prior to retirement, he had been employed as a claims representative for the Social Security Administration. He was a member of Christ Episcopal Church, the Kiwanis Club, Mountain View Rotary and the Greensburg Elks Lodge 511. He was a sergeant in the U.S. Army infantry during World War II. He was wounded twice in battle and received the Purple Heart and the Oak Leaf Cluster Medal. He had also served in the U.S. Air Force. Surviving are a son, John ``Mitch' Hughes IV and wife, Nickola ``Nikki,' of Greensburg; a daughter, Karen R. Yeckel and husband, Paul, of Greensburg; five grandchildren, Mitchell Hughes V, Nicholas Steven and Tyler Alexander Hughes, Lesley Ross and Paul Yeckel III; a sister, Elizabeth ``Betty' Lovaiz and husband, John, of Bethel Park; a nephew and a niece, Richard Iams and Janet Wertz. Relatives and friends are invited to celebrate the life of John Tuesday from 4 p.m. until the time of the funeral service at 8 p.m. in the CLEMENT L. PANTALONE FUNERAL HOME INC., 409 W.
