Katherine Blenko Obituary
Katherine "Kitty" MacDonald Blenko, a resident of Haverford for more than 50 years, died Dec. 5, 2017, after several years of declining health. Born Sept. 14, 1929, in Pittsburgh, she was a daughter of the late George Field MacDonald Jr. and Katherine Cunningham MacDonald and the sister of Lois MacDonald Antinucci, who predeceased her. She had the good fortune to grow up the child of a candy manufacturer. Kitty and her husband Don celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in 2012, not long before his death. After meeting at age 8 through their parents, who were longtime friends, they dated in high school and college. Their 50th anniversary celebration in Bar Harbor, Maine, was a memorable occasion for all in attendance. Kitty attended the Winchester Thurston School (where she was president of her graduating class), graduated from Wellesley College and earned a master's degree in retailing from the University of Pittsburgh. She worked as a department store buyer before beginning a second career raising five children. She and Don were devoted parents who loyally attended innumerable athletic, church, school and scouting events in support of their children. Later in life, they took great pleasure in visiting and making mischief with their nine grandchildren. Kitty spent countless hours as a class mother and librarian at her children's schools and a frequent visitor to residents of area retirement homes. For more than 25 years, she spent her Monday mornings volunteering at the intensive care unit at Bryn Mawr Hospital. Kitty also managed to find time for her other interests. She was a skillful knitter and needlepointer, a dedicated reader of five newspapers, and with Don, a Philadelphia Orchestra season ticket holder for many years. She belonged to Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church for decades and continued to walk to church as long as her health permitted. Perhaps her favorite place was Nantucket's Madaket Beach, where she spent many an August afternoon reading, swimming and watching the sun set. Kitty is survived by her son David and his wife, Kathleen, of Ranchos Palos Verdes, Calif., and their children, Jennifer and Peter; her son Tom, his wife, Rinat Shimshi, and their children, Abigail and Elizabeth, of San Jose, Calif.; her daughter Dr. Katherine Blenko and her husband, Dr. Joseph Belanoff, of Woodside, Calif., and their children, Edward and Julia; her son Don Jr. and his wife, Marcia, of Wellesley, Mass., and their children Sarah, Katherine and Nicholas; and her son James and his wife, Shubha Pathak, of Bethesda, Md. They will miss her immensely.
The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 9, 2018, at the chapel at Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church, 625 Montgomery Ave., Bryn Mawr, PA 19010. Interment will be at Homewood Cemetery, Pittsburgh.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Free Library of Philadelphia.
