Carol Shaughnessy Obituary

Carol J. Shaughnessy, 77, of Fox Chapel, formerly of Forest Hills, passed away peacefully Thursday, Nov. 24, 2016, after an inspiring, courageous and humble battle with ALS. She was the daughter of the late William and Anne Skapik; beloved wife of the late Michael J. Shaughnessy, M.D.; loving mother of Maureen Shaughnessy of San Rafael, Calif., and Michael (Amy) Shaughnessy of Ross Township; cherished grandmother of Nathaniel, Declan, Emma, and Maeve; sister of Michael Skapik, of Claremont, Calif.; sister-in-law and best friend of Eileen Connelly; also survived by nieces, nephews and cousins. Carol was a graduate of Our Lady of Mercy Academy and San Jose College, where she was a sister of the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. Carol spent many years as an art teacher in West Jefferson School District and The Ellis School, where her creativity and passion shined. Carol was also a savvy business lady whose roots began in her mother's clothing store in Clairton, and later applied that experience to help run the Shaughnessy Funeral Home in Duquesne. Carol also became one of the top listing real estate associates for Cimino Realty and Prudential Realty. She actively donated her time and creativity to help raise money for any cause to better humanity. Carol embraced life to the fullest. Many will remember her as a woman of character, strength, intellect, talent and charm. Throughout her battle with ALS, Carol continued to live her life with dignity and grace, never allowing the disease to diminish her zest for life. In doing so, she will continue to inspire those she has left behind.
Friends received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 27, 2016, at the WEDDELL-AJAK FUNERAL HOME, 100 Center Ave., Aspinwall, where a parting prayer will be held at 9:30 a.m. Monday, followed at 10 a.m. by a Christian Funeral Mass in St. Scholastica Church, Aspinwall.
In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully suggests a memorial contribution to www.alskids.com or The ALS Association of Western PA, 416 Lincoln Ave. Millvale, PA 15209, in honor of Carol's Crew.

My love to Carol's children, Maureen & Michael and her brother, Mike and their families. Being her cousin, I've known Carol for 67 years and she has been such an inspiration for me. She was full of life and so much fun!

Plus Carol was sooooo coooool! The summer of 1964 when visiting her in Pittsburgh, my cousin and I told her how much we loved the Beatles. The next thing we knew, she was on the phone to someone and had scored 4 tickets for us to see the Beatles in Las Vegas a few weeks later!

Her zest for life, her strength and courage were even more apparent these last few years. Now she is free and at peace. I love and miss you, Carol! xoxo

The Florida Shatlocks will always remember your steadfast attendance at the annual summer reunions! Even when it was physically difficult, Carol, you were there with a smile and happy conversation! May you "picnic" freely with family members who have gone before you, in the beautiful parks in heaven!
You, Carol, and your family are in our prayers.

My sympathy to Carol's family including her brother Michael. Our families were great friends back in the Clairton days. Carol was always a beautiful person inside and outside. She will glow brightly in her heavenly home.

Much love,

Grandma,You have been my inspiration and my reason to fight for a cure ever since your diagnosis. During this time the only thing that finds me peace is that you are at peace. The world feels ten times smaller than it was two days ago, but please know there will always be a huge place for you in my heart. I love you, Maeve

Mom, may you once again have long extended conversations with new friends and old friends. May you play a round or two of golf with Dad. May you give your mother a BIG hug and tell her that you love her and missed her. May you eat a juicy tender steak by yourself that can be cut with a fork. May you stand and take a long hot shower by yourself. May you finally find laughter in an 'Olive' colored room in heaven. May you look down upon us and know we are better because you were a part of our lives. I miss you mom. Love Michael
