Albert Livingston Amshel Obituary
Albert Livingston Amshel, M.D., 90, of Point Breeze, died peacefully in his sleep, as he prayed, Friday, Oct. 2, 2015. He was the son of the late Dr. Jesse Amshel and Ruth Bibo Amshel; husband of Ellen Bachman Amshel; father of Bruce and Gail Amshel; and grandfather of Caitlyn and Eli Amshel. Upon graduating from New York Military Academy, he enlisted in the Army Air Corps, World War II, where he was a radio operator/gunner, 381st Bomber Group, on B-17s in the European Theater. After the war, he completed his Bachelor of Science degree in two years at the University of Pittsburgh, then his medical degree at Jefferson Medical School in Philadelphia. After five years of surgical residency, he established a private practice in Colon and Rectal Surgery. He said that he worked hard and played hard. An avid golfer and gin rummy player at Green Oaks country Club, and tap dancer, telling all that Gene Kelly was his teacher, he seemed to get the most out of life. Private interment was held at the West View Cemetery of the Rodef Shalom Congregation. Friends will be received at the family home, at the caller's convenience. Memorial contributions may be made to Operation Safety Net (a charity to benefit the homeless), 101 Bradford Road, Wexford, PA 15090. Professional services trusted to the D'ALESSANDRO FUNERAL HOME and CREMATORY LTD., Lawrenceville. www.dalessandroltd.com.
