Dr. Michael J. Wargo, 61, of Alexandria, Va., passed away Sunday, Aug. 4, 2013, in his home. Born Sept. 14, 1951, in McKeesport, he was a son of the late John J. and Margaret (Maksin) Wargo. He was a graduate of St. Joseph School in Clairton and Clairton High School and he received a Bachelor of Science in earth and planetary sciences and a Doctor of Science in materials science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Afterward, Michael both taught and performed research at MIT, before joining NASA in Washington, D.C. He served as chief exploration scientist for NASA Human Exploration and Operations Mission and was a leading contributor to NASA's human lunar and planetary exploration program. In his nearly two-decade career at NASA, he received numerous awards, including NASA's Exceptional Service Medal and seven group achievement awards. He is survived by his wife, Adele Morrissette, of New York, N.Y.; brothers, Dr. John J. Wargo, of Clairton, J. David (Mary Trezza) Wargo, of New York, N.Y., and Robert T. Wargo, of Clairton; nieces; and many beloved cousins. Friends and family will be received 2 to 4 and 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 11, 2013, in the EVERLY-WHEATLEY FUNERAL HOME 1500 Braddock Road, Alexandria, Va. 22302. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 12:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 12, 2013, in Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, also in Alexandria, Va. Interment will be private. A memorial service will be held at a later date in the Pittsburgh area. Local arrangements are in charge of the A.J. BEKAVAC FUNERAL HOME, Clairton, Pa.
