Carolyn Whyman Jack Byrne, 83, a 45-year resident of Sewickley, died Sunday, June 3, 2018, in St. Louis, Mo., after an extended struggle with dementia. She was born June 19, 1934, in New York, N.Y., to Henry C. and Alice (Bengtson) Whyman, and was raised in New York City and Long Island, N.Y.. She received her bachelor's degree, magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa, from Allegheny College, and a master's degree in chemistry from Yale University. She taught high school chemistry for many years, primarily for the Moon Area School District.Prior to moving to Pennsylvania, she was employed by the School of Public Health at Harvard University. During her years in Sewickley, she was an active member of the Presbyterian Church of Sewickley and the Child Health Association of Sewickley (where she served as president). She was a voracious reader, an avid needlepointer and a loving and devoted mother and grandmother. Surviving are her two daughters, Amelia Jack Bond (Art), of St. Louis, Mo., and Laura Jack Butler (William), of Atlanta, Ga.; her six grandchildren; and her brother, Walden H. Whyman (Hope), of McKinney, Texas. She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry S. Byrne; and her parents.
