Edward A. Yorkgitis Obituary
Edward A. Yorkgitis passed away Saturday, May 17, 2014, in St. Mary's Health Center in Jefferson City, Mo., the city in which he had lived since 2007. Ed was born April 2, 1923, in Courtney, near Monongahela City in Southwestern Pennsylvania and graduated from Langley High School in Pittsburgh. He served his country in World War II as a 1st Lieutenant Navigator with the 12th Air Force of the Army Air Corps and flew fifty missions over France, Italy and the Balkans. In September 2009, Ed was privileged to visit the National World War II Memorial as an Honor Flight participant out of St. Louis and recently spoke of his war experiences to students at two of his grandchildren's schools. After the war, he completed his bachelor's and master's degrees in chemical engineering at The Pennsylvania State University (1948) and Carnegie Institute of Technology (1950), respectively. Ed worked at Calgon Corporation as a consulting engineer until 1964 and at the Corporate Research Laboratory of U.S. Steel Corporation as a research engineer until he retired in 1982.His area of expertise was water treatment and corrosion. Ed's interests over his long life included history, theater, several sports, travel - most recently to Lithuania, Poland and the Netherlands, growing tomatoes, picking strawberries, reading the comics, watching his children and grandchildren's musical and theatrical performances and their sports competitions, helping out with the White Elephant Sale of the annual St. Elizabeth Spring-A-Rama and, most especially, enjoying the company of his wife, children and grandchildren. Ed was preceded in death by Helen T. Yorkgitis, his beloved wife of 58 years; two daughters, Susan and Marianne "Mimi" Carl; and sisters, Mary Dubinak and Josephine Mroz. He is survived by his son, David, his wife, Mary Kay, and their children, David Paul, Teresa, Regina Helen, Joseph, Catherine and Margaret Mary, of Basking Ridge, N.J.; son-in-law, Scott Carl, of Middleburg, and his daughter, Erin; daughter, Elaine and her husband, Ken Nimmer, of Saint Paul, Minn.; son, Chip, his wife, Carol, and their children, Matthew, Stephen and Patrick, of Millersville, Md.; daughter, Lisa Nahach, her husband, Jim, and their children, Suzette, Timothy and Elizabeth Rose, of Jefferson City, Mo.; brother, John, of Pittsburgh; and many well-loved nieces and nephews.
