Barbara J. Baker Obituary
Barbara Jane Kessler Baker, of Fox Chapel, went to be with the Lord after an extended illness of pulmonary fibrosis Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2017. She was predeceased by her parents, Geraldine Tompkins Kessler and James Baker Kessler; her sisters, Patricia Kessler and Jacquelyn Kessler Lukehart; and her daughter, Gwendolyn Baker Thomas. She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Robert Love Baker, M.D. Barbara was born in DuBois and grew up in Punxsutawney. She then went on to attend and graduate from the Western Pennsylvania Hospital School of Nursing, receiving her RN degree in 1952. She was married to Robert Aug. 16, 1952. She gave her time to the church and numerous groups, including the Aspinwall Meals on Wheels, the Pittsburgh Civic Garden Center, the Fox Chapel Presbyterian Church Woman's Association, the Allegheny County Medical Society Auxiliary, the United Presbyterian Home for the Aged (the Woodwell) and many other organizations. She was a member of Hebron Church in Penn Hills, the Guyasuta Garden Club, the Twentieth Century Club, and the Western Pennsylvania School of Nursing Alumni. In addition to her husband, she is survived by her sister, Vicki Kessler Cole; her son, Robert Love Baker II (Connie Hoffman Baker); daughter, Patricia Baker Dement (Joseph Miller Dement); and son-in law, James Henry Thomas Jr. Barbara had eight grandchildren, Robert Love Baker III (Kathleen Hillstrom Baker), Andrew Hoffman Baker (Allison Estes Baker), James Henry Thomas III (Samantha Santos Thomas), David Kessler Thomas, Barbara Diane Thomas, Jessica Dement Connolly (Paul Michael Connolly), Timothy Miller Dement (Emily Tinsley Dement) and Bennett Baker Dement. She had three great-grandchildren, Penelope Jeanne Baker, Elizabeth Grace Baker and Liam Robert Baker. She was greatly loved by her husband and family but most of all by her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, with whom she will live eternally.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 6, 2018, at Hebron Church, 10460 Frankstown Road, Pittsburgh, PA 15235. Arrangements trusted to THOMAS M. SMITH FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATORY LTD., Blawnox.
