She was born March 27, 1922, in Dayton, Pa., to Miles Washington Schrecengost and Venice Irene (Bowser) Schrecengost. Ruby grew up in Dayton and graduated from Dayton High School in 1939. She served in the Navy as a switchboard operator throughout World War II and, following the war, moved to Harrisburg to continue working as a switchboard operator. During those years, Ruby worked as a switchboard operator at Horne's department store. She was a very active member of First United Presbyterian Church of Turtle Creek, where she was a church deacon, served on the Centennial Committee and visited shut-ins. Ruby also spent many years as a troop leader with the Girl Scouts and participated in Round Up. Gardening and crafting were two of her favorite hobbies. In her later years, she especially loved working on plastic needle point, which she continued to do up until just a few months before her passing.
