Bertha Potthoff Obituary
Bertha Otto Potthoff, 92, of Latrobe, died Monday, Jan. 22, 2018, at her daughter's home. Born Aug. 29, 1925, in Latrobe, she was a daughter of the late Joseph J. Hoffmann Sr. and Mary (Hritz) Hoffmann. Bertha was a member of St. John the Evangelist Church, Latrobe, and its Rosary Altar Christian Mothers. She was also a member of the St. John Seniors. Bertha was retired from the Latrobe Brewing Company, where she worked as the switchboard receptionist, and later as manager of the Rolling Rock gift shop. She was an active member of the Latrobe Business and Professional Women's Club, the Latrobe Century Club and the Civic Club. She also belonged to the AARP and a special group known as the "Ya Ya" Sisters. Bertha traveled extensively with Geneva Bus Tours and visited all 50 states. She was known for her sewing skills along with her interest in tole painting and ceramics. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Wilbur J. Otto, in 1978; her second husband, William J. Potthoff, in 1996; two daughters, Kathy Otto Seifert and Phyllis J. Otto; a brother, Joseph J. Hoffmann Jr.; and a sister, Helen Bridge. Bertha is survived by her daughter, Gretchen M. Otto, Ph.D., of Ypsilanti, Mich.; a son-in-law, Elwood Seifert, of State College; two grandsons, Paul and Joseph Seifert; two brothers, Paul Hoffmann and his wife, Diana, of Florida, and Frank Hoffmann and his wife, Barbara, of Florida; two sisters, Betty Jane Schoming and her husband, James, of Latrobe, and Mary Visconti, of Latrobe; a sister-in-law, Nan Hoffmann, of Latrobe; a special friend, Mary Washabaugh, of Latrobe; and she is also survived by several nieces and nephews and her two furry companions.
In accordance with Bertha's wishes, there will be no public visitations. Family and friends are invited to attend a funeral Mass at 10 a.m. Friday in St. John the Evangelist Church, Latrobe, with the Rev. Anthony Carbone as celebrant. Private inurnment will be at St. Mary's Cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by the JOHN J. LOPATICH FUNERAL HOME INC., 601 Weldon St., Latrobe.
