Kathryn Clarke Obituary
Kathryn Donegan Clarke, also affectionately known as "Kitty", passed away at home, Thursday, Sept. 6, 2018, surrounded by her loving family, after a prolonged illness. Kathryn was born Oct. 4, in Larimer. She was the adored wife of 68 years of Edwin V. Clarke Jr.; devoted mother to Kathryn (Bill), Jody (Ed) and Tripp (Katie); beloved grandmother, aka "Da", of Ryan (Emily), Callie, Rose, Kat (Cornelius), Kristen (Devin), Evan (Taylor), Will and Catlin; and great-grandmother of Will, Jules, Gray and Quin. She was preceded in death by her parents, Kathryn and John Donegan, and brothers, John and Bill. Kathryn was known for many things, her beauty, grace, thoughtfulness, sharp wit, prodigious memory, her bridge prowess, her philanthropy and love of the arts, as well as her readiness to let you know exactly what she thought of something. She was very proud of her Irish heritage and loved her life, which centered first on her family, and was enriched by many friends of all ages. She was genuinely interested in people and loved to know about their lives and interests. She was always ahead of her time and her forward-thinking, positive attitude inspired everyone, especially young people. As a young woman, she left the quiet confines of Irwin, where she grew up, and became a flight attendant for Capital Airlines. She was based out of Washington, D.C., and led an exciting and adventurous life of travel for five years before giving it up to marry Ed, her high school sweetheart. She began her yoga practice more than 45 years ago and focused on health and nutrition long before they were part of the cultural mainstream. She was committed to daily exercise and up until her recent illness would walk two miles a day, rain or shine. As a wife, Kathryn was an asset to and supported Ed's career with Westinghouse, moving eight times before settling in Sewickley nearly 40 years ago. During their long marriage, they traveled extensively both for Ed's business as well as wonderful trips with friends. Kathryn never lost her curiosity about life, current events and most of all, about people. She will be sadly missed by everyone who knew her.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 9, 2018, at R.D. COPELAND'S SEWICKLEY, 702 Beaver St. A funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Sept. 10, 2018, in St. James Parish, 200 Walnut St., Sewickley.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Girl's Hope of Pittsburgh or The Pittsburgh Symphony.
