Lawrence R. Zelenak Obituary
Lawrence R. Zelenak, 90, of Hecla, passed away Thursday, Feb. 8, 2018, at his home with his children by his side. Larry was born Sept. 24, 1927, in Mt. Pleasant, a son of the late Frank and Mary Zahradnik Zelenak. Larry was a member of Visitation Roman Catholic Church and Rosary Altar Society, VFW Post 3368 and Slovak Club, Mt. Pleasant. He was also a member of Hecla Sportsman's Club and was the last surviving charter member of the Hecla Volunteer Fire Department. Larry was formerly employed as a chief inspector in the rolling mill of Latrobe Steel, retiring after 37 years of service. He was a World War II Army veteran, awarded the World War II Victory Medal, and an avid gardener and Pitt and Steelers fan. Surviving are his children, Raymond Zelenak and wife Sandee, of Latrobe, Phyllis Zelenak, of Hecla, and Priscilla Sopkovich, of Mt. Pleasant; grandchildren, Lisa Mankins and husband Craig, Jennifer Sopkovich, Chad Zelenak, Jessica Sopkovich Baldwin and Darci Noonan and husband, Patrick; great grandchildren, Dylan Rodgers, Jeffrey Mankins, Abigail Mankins, Kaitlyn Mankins, Jenna Marie Stoner, Richard Stoner, Alex Baldwin, Catrina and Robert; a sister, Mary Rogacki, of Mt. Pleasant; sisters-in law, Mary Catherine Ross and Dorothy Zelenak; special godchild, Cheryl Rusinko; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Larry was preceded in death by his wife, Bertha Rusinko Zelenak; brothers, Joseph, Frank, Elmer, Edward and Charles Zelenak; and a sister, Elizabeth Estock.
Family and friends are invited from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday to SALOOM-REGA FUNERAL SERVICE, 730 W. Main St., Mt. Pleasant, where prayers of transfer will be held at 9:30 a.m. Monday followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m. at Visitation Roman Catholic Church, Mt. Pleasant, with the Rev. Richard J. Kosisko as celebrant. Interment with military honors conducted by American Legion Post 446 and VFW Post 3368 will follow in Visitation Cemetery. A parish wake service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home followed by the recital of the rosary by the Visitation Rosary Altar Society.
